Dislocated Ankle

TEXgrl

New member
This past weekend my husband completely dislocated his ankle. the bone ripped out the skin on the inside of his ankle as well. Surgery saturday night to put it all back together. The doctor is saying he'll be off his feet for about 13 weeks. Has anyone here had this kind of injury? Is this time frame right? Will the ankle ever be the same again? any information would be helpfull.

thanks

ow

how the HELL did he manage to do that. sprined ankle, torn ankle ligaments fine....dislocated, ouch

i recently sprained or tore my ankle ligament, which one it is depends on how quick it heals

what did the doc say

this website kicks ass. i would have said the ankle may be weaker than before, dependng on how it heals. but thats just me wth very little knowledge

Hey Texgrl, Im a physician assistant for a large group of orthopaedic surgeons and we see and treat this type of injury on some of our trauma cases. How did your husband injure his ankle? Did he have a fracture / dislocation? There are quite a few factors here that could and will affect his healing. First off, how did they fix it? They either had to use internal fixation, meaning plates and screws, or external fixation, meaning pins coming out through the skin connected together with bars. 13 weeks sounds typical unless he has whats called a pilan Fx. which involves the joint line. As far as the ankle being normal again, I hate to tell you, but with that type of injury it will never be the same. Even if your Dr says it will be. Does your husband smoke? If he does he needs to quit. Smoking drastically slows bone healing. I hope some of this helps, let me know if I can help out anymore, and I hope he gets well soon.

Seen it one time in a head on collision, guy was pushing on his brake pedal real hard, when the cars hit his ankle dislocated and ripped through the skin, no other apparent injuries, took him to a level one trauma center for their orthopedic capabilities, and due to the mechanism of injury, three days later he died from a blood clot that went to his heart, your husband sounds like he is past that stage so hopefully his ankle will heal quickly.
