Dishwasher help

lately everything from the dishwasher has been comming out dirty. All the cups and specially the spoon will have all sorts of little crap on them, like food bits or something.

Is there any sort of filter I should be checking or anything?

I've never had that problem, but i do know that there is a little filter on the bottom of a dishwasher that you are supposed to clean out once in a while (I never do)
