MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. -- A man accused of repeatedly abusing his girlfriend's 7-year-old son faced new charges Thursday after police said he may have permanently disfigured the boy by repeatedly burning his genitals with cigarettes.
David Privette, 22, of Boston, was first arrested on assault and battery charges Monday after officials at the boy's school filed a third report of abuse with the state Department of Social Services. On Thursday, police added charges of indecent assault and battery and mayhem.
Middleborough Police Chief Gary Russell said the boy had four burn marks in his genital area and one on his buttocks when police were contacted Monday.
"There is going to be scarring," Russell said. "This isn't just like somebody put a cigarette out on somebody's skin. Some of these burn marks are an inch long -- it wasn't just a quick touch with a cigarette."
Privette pleaded not guilty to the first set of charges earlier this week. His lawyer said Privette claims he was not at his girlfriend's house when the abuse allegedly occurred.
DSS officials have said they would review the agency's handling of the case. Privette wasn't arrested until the third report of abuse to DSS, even though he had been reported to the agency by the boy's school in December and then again on March 4.
The boy told the nurse at his school that his mother's boyfriend had hit him with a belt, burned him with cigarettes and urinated on his head while he was taking a bath, according to a police report.
The boy told school officials that when he told his mother about the abuse she said Privette "wouldn't do anything to hurt him."
Privette is a former convict who had served time for crack cocaine possession and assaulting a police officer.
