Dimel Deadlift Video....Finally!

How do they differ from a Romanian Deadlift?

On a side-note, as pretty as Hannibal is, I would've much rathered spatts to be the star of that video.

Hannibal insisted on charming you with his plate rattling pelvis. :)

RDL's are usually used to isolate the hamstrings in some fashion. This is all about getting the hips back and forth explosively, for example to lock out a squat or deadlift. It's more back and forth, than down and up, basically.

I found this question/answer on Elitefts.com, and later realized it was asked by our very own animalmass:

Hey Guys,
What's the difference between a Dimel Deadlift and A Romanian Deadlift? They seem like the same lift, so all I can figure, is that the Dimel is explosive, and fast, and the romanian is slower. Please Help.

These movements are not even close. A romanian dealift is much like a stiff leg deal but the bar never leave the legs and the hips are pushed way back. The barbell also is never locked out at the top. A Dimel deadlift is the top part of a deadlift. Start the bar at the top and drop down to just below the knees and rebound back up as fast as you can. -Dave Tate

I dunno - I've done my RDLs just like that vid you posted Spatts but with a shrug onto toes - fairly fast and explosively too.

Just like doing a hang stiff armed clean pull

why does Tate say you don't lockout RDLs? The RDL I know as originally demostarted by Nicu Vlad when he toured the US, a deadlift that doesn't touch the ground or heavier and slower hang clean pull. That is how Istavan Javourek describes it and he is the one that invented the move :)

look at the middle pic of Nicu vlad performing an RDL, looks exactly where Hannibal stops.

but you can go lower if your standing on blocks as shown in the third pic

Here's one key difference (from the same site as your pics):

"6. The movement should not be fast but steady and under control all the way."

I also think that over the years BBers have adapted this move to isolate the hams better. Not coming all the way to lockout at the top keeps a solid tension on the hams, and going lower increases the ROM within that.

Call it whatever you want...if you're training your squat/dead lockout, that's the point. :)

Ok there is one thing I would like to add: None of these look anything like an RDL, I was given the opportunity to work with a pretty well known strength coach for a couple of days and the way that he explained it the bar will never get much lower than the knee. Basically you want the hamstrings and low back to be pre stressed so they are flexed the same way they would be for a squat, then pushed back till the hamstrings are fully pre stressed. The bar is lowered down while keeping contact with the thighs and the ass should be pushed back as you go down to accomodate for this. This is a good move for an olympic lifter b/c you are being redundant if you are doing sld, which is what the picture is depicting, or dimmel deadlifts. The olympic move I have used that mimics the dimmel is the stiff arm floor pull, sometimes snatch grip sometimes clean grip.
