Did Deads for the first time last night...

DAMN you guys were right!!! My back is KILLING me (in a good way). I did 3 sets of 7 @ 185 ... but it sounds like that is way to much(reps). I'll move 'er up to 205 and do way fewer reps.

I may not be able to stand tomorrow.

Actually when you are going heavy, even high rep sets are effectively a string of closely-spaced singles. This is because the eccentric portion of the exercise is very different from the concentric movement. So for everything but the lightest warm-up sets, you have to re-set for every rep, making it a single.

I do sets of 12, 12, 5-10, 1-10 and it works fine for me.

I found heavy sets of 5 were great for building mass and strength, but low enough reps that I could still maintain my form

I also just started doing deadlifts about 2 weeks ago. I'm doing 2 sets of 6 singles (1 second break between reps) at 205. The first time I did them I did 3 sets of 6 singles at 135(hey... it was my first time in 5 years of lifting doing them). Both times my back has absolutely been throbbing the next day in a good way, and my hams are so sore I have to walk like a cowboy. Next week I think I'm going to try doing 225lbs.

Hey Needsize, where in Canada are you from? I'm from BC...

DrBones, I'm in ON

Me too! Nothing gets me more pumped up then doing some heavy deadlifts!

The deadlift is my best friend in lifting... becuz it hurts so nicely.
Squats for instance hurt in a way that sucks. Deadlifts hurt too but they just make me feel all masochistic and love it.

also the dead is the only lift for me that progresses steadily... unlike bench and squat which often plateau or even go down for a while.

Im excited.... DEADS tonight!

Im gonna put 'er to 205, pause between reps.... and hurt like hell tomorrow :D

btw - I am the ONLY guy doing deads in my gym, thats one of the main reasons I havent donr them earlier. Everyone looks at me like Im nuts. Oh well... fuck 'em :D

I love deads...but not too often.

205? is that kilos... or are you that 1 person out there... somewhere, who is weaker than me?

how come bro?

My strength tends to go down and my body can't seem to take the stress of heavy deads (or any full deads) for more than about 3 weeks. I get a lot more deadlift increase out of box squats, pull throughs, glute ham raises, reverse hypers, band ham curls, etc...than I do from doing deads all the time.

I try to do some sort of dead every week though...and there are tons of variations.
Speed deads
Partial Deads (tons of heights too)
Deads with bands
Dimel Deads
etc...

In the gym ive been lifting recently, im the only guy who does deads also. I had to find a friend who knew who how to do them to show me. They really work me hard, I didn't start doing them until recently, before i thought squats really worked me out but after a set of deads i need to sit down.

You could probably count on your hand how many guys deadlift at any gym. I promise you though, those guys are gonna be the strongest, biggest, most hardcore guys at the gym.

welcome to Club DEAD

Would someone not mind posting a link to a page with proper deadlift form....i want to start but am afraid of injury....no one at my gym does them so i can't ask there.

I did them for my third time yesterday... I definitely anticipate doing deads all week now. I'm up to 255 for 4 reps now....
I'm pretty sure the weight is going to start moving up a bit slower now though.
