Hey guys I just found out I have to have 2 of my back teeth extracted. I'm already missing 2 back there to begin with. Do you guys know if they can put like crowns in if there is no tooth there? I was too upset over it to ask my dentist when I was there.

Yes it is most likely your dentist can attatch a 'fake' tooth called a pontic 'hooked onto' the natural tooth (next to the extracted tooth socket). The usual mode is to crown or 'cap' your natural existing tooth with the 'fake' tooth or pontic attached to the crown (which would sit over the extracted tooth's socket).

Hey thanks Poink, that sounds a helluva lot better than getting an implant which is what some people said I would have to have. Can I get this pontic tooth thing done at the regular dentist? Also is it something that they have to take a mold of my teeth and send it in to get it done or can they do it the same day I go?

In dental terms, I am referring to a fixed (cemented) bridge. Implants are very expensive ($900+ per tooth), prone to infection, esp. the posterior (rear) teeth where it is hard to maintain good oral hygiene, etc. If they break, or fail you are out the $. Usually, you go to a general-family dentist and he can make these bridges for you. You have the good, natural tooth prepped (to accept a crown/cap), impressions are taken, a temporary acrylic crown is made, the impressions are sent to a dental laboratory to be manufactured over 1-2 weeks, you go back and the new bridge (crown with pontic attached) is cemented. You probably will have to have a little anesthetic at the prep visit because some gum tissue will be slightly irritated, but not for the cementalion/2nd visit. Get (pre-treatment) estimates if you have insurance, and it doesn't hurt to get a 2nd opinion. If you don't have ins., still get some 2nd opinions (prices).

p0ink, first off thanks so much for all the helpful info!! I pretty much see how this works now but have a couple more questions. Like I said before I have 2 back teeth already gone and they want to extract 2 more. Do you think they would let me get the two bridges(w/pontics) in place first then extract the 2 teeth? I'm just thinking that way I'll only still have 2 missing instead of 4. Then once they extract the 2 bad teeth I can get 2 more bridges and won't have any holes. Secondly, do you know if the pontic bridges show any metal or anything or do they look like real natural teeth? Thanks again, I've learned alot that my dentist has failed to explain.

oh shit, i forgot all about this thread. ill get back to you tonight.

Thats cool. I have one place in the back of my mouth that will have two molars missing. Do you know if they could bridge two that are side by side?

I went to the dentist for a general check up a few weeks ago and they said I need fillings, which I am planning on getting, but they also said they need to do some kind of root surgury/root cleaning..I forgot exactly what it was called?...but are they just trying to scam me or do I really need to do this shit to prevent gingovitis(sp?)?

The procedure includes cutting the area between my teeth, then cleaning it ,and the supposedly it will heal normally?

I asked her why mouth wash won't clean it, but she said it can't get into those area's but I don't understand why not?

Just to clarify some things.First off, if they are taking out the last tooth in your arch (ie you have no teeth left behind where they're taking the tooth out) you CAN"T HAVE A BRIDGE. If a dentist tries to put a cantelievered pontic in the back you're asking for trouble. A cantelievered pontic is where there's a pontic attached to only one tooth vice a bridge which is between two teeth. A cantelievered pontic will fail in the posterior. To much force on two teeth for only one tooth to handle.

Implants cost a couple of grand each (to include implant / core/ crown) and if you can afford it is your best option.
