Yesterday while doing a heavy set of stiff legged deadlifts, it felt a little pain in my left delt at the end of the set, which went away after about 30 seconds. I continued my workout, but while doing some lat work on the hammerstrength machines it began to bother me again. It felt like a knife being stuck between the anterior and medial head of my left delt. It was a sharp, piercing pain the rest of the day. When I woke up this morning, it fell fine, so I proceeded with my regular Friday chest, shoulder, arm workout. During my last set for chest, it began to hurt once again, so I skipped my shoulder work and finished up with my tricep routine. It hurt like hell, but after taking a nap immediately after training, the pain is gone again. I move my left arm, rotate my shoulder, pick things up etc and there is no pain now. Anyone have an explaination of what might have happened, why there is no pain now, and what I should do about this?

could be an obstruction in the glenoid fossa and the articulation of the proximal end of the humerus. See you might have stretched the tendons on the SLDL and the responded by contracting and snflaming and when move the wrong way the inflamed area could pinch a nerve or the damaged area could be compromised. either way try using heat therapy and not icer because you don't want your muscle to get cold and tighten; this will increase the tension on the tendo and cause more damage

Pinch something maybe? Maybe something is a bit out of alignment?

I don't think it's anything serious....

But bump for more opinions. :)

Sounds to me like a rotator pre-injury. A warning more or less. Are you currently implimenting any form of active therapy/recovery right now in your routine body?

If yes - alter it to another method whether by band or by hyrotherapy.

If no - ............http://www.dolfzine.com/page391.htm

It's a beginning and there is no reason to put a stop to the train when its running full steam ahead.

I train each body part 3 times a week, so not alot of room for active recovery outside of stretching. Normally I do not feel any stress in my delts or rotator cuffs doing sldl's, so it struck me as a bit bizaar.

So should I keep heat on it over the weekend? I take saturday off from training, but do legs and back again on sundays.

keep using heat but do not stretch, just use bands. Stretching is the last thing you want to do with a muscle or tendon injury

Right, I haven't been stretching it. Even I have enough sense not to. Of course it doesn't hurt now. I woke up from napping at around 11:00 am, and it feels perfect now. Of course, that doesn't mean that there isn't some potential damage. If anything it must be a stretched tendon. It occured doing sldl's, which do not contract the delts. The thing that bothers me about that is, I have handled much heavier poundages doing conventional deadlifts. I was only using 405, because that is the heaviest weight I use for sl currently. I've subjected the same tendons to a higher level of stress using conventional deadlifts as well as half-deadlifts in the rack (up to 725). Though perhaps the angle is an issue here. WHile performing those movements the bar is closer to my body, and the shoulder joints are at a different angle that stiff legged deads.

angle is a huge issu since on normal deads the delts are more inline to help the humerus since they contract from a shorter; hence stronger position.
