I've always wondered what causes deja vu...

what do you guys think causes it?

think maybe sometimes when you dream you dont remembre it...then when something in real life happens that is simliar your mind sorta flicks and thinks it happened before

Wow, what a great question. I've wondered this for so long, I'd really like some answers here. Now I'm gonna be thinking about it all night long. Good job t3c, this one of the best threads ever, seriously awesome post.

Cmon guys tell us the answer to this, please.

Among the quasi-scientific explanations, what might be called the split-image school holds that two parts of the brain participate simultaneously in the process of perception. If for some reason the impression from part A arrives in one's consciousness out of sync with the impression from part B, one has the sensation of experiencing the the thing twice.

Others explain déjà vu by analogy to a tape recorder. They propose that memory storage is accomplished by means of a "recording head" and memory recall by a "playback head." During déjà vu the two heads are erroneously situated above the same bit of mental blank tape. An experience is thus recorded and remembered simultaneously, with the result that the present is experienced as the past.

Or in other words:

It could be a time-loop we are experiening. Some wacky scientist had invented time travel and is causing a rip in time causing this thing called de, ja vu. But hey that's just one therory.

thank you that was very interesting. i have had strong enough deja vu's where i have recited in my mind already what happened in the next minute or more. on more than a couple of occasions. sometimes i may go for a couple of months without a "memory" of deja vu, and sometimes i can have a few a week. it is very odd. in time i have come to think "oh that's weird, deja vu" but when i was younger i spent much time thinking about it. i have a memory from when i was young, about 5 yrs old, and remembering the outcome of part of a day right down to what my mother was saying before she finished saying it. you're explanation was a good one, but leaves out explanation for when you know the outcome of the situation

Your saying you sometimes know what happens in advance?

You know you really should look into the gambling business. Ill be your agent :D

Bingo! That study came out about 3 years ago and it seem the most probably cause of it.

Too bad both sides of the brain don't serve the same purpose.
That study was thrown out.

You might be confusing this postulation with the study that suggests cross wiring of the temporal lobe causes one to confuse the present with the past.

Or possibly the one regarding temporal lobe epilepsy.

IMO- they are past life experiences...thats why so many times the situation is predicted by the person having it....including dialogue....
