Definitely a beginner client, don´t know what to do

Hi.

I got a friend, who wants to start training, again. I threw some templates and programmes to him, but with all, he got a overtrain/staleness/demotivated state.

-I got him the Starr workout with 5x5.
-I handed him out the dual factor 5x5.
-I gave him some hardgainer typos.
-I presented him the one muscle per week with 3 workouts.

Everytime he can work em out for max 3 weeks. Then he quits it, because he doesn´t really see results. For sure, he sees some, at first, but then they stall.

He is mid 30s, works in a office, has family, ecto with belly. Last time i gave him rippetoes program, after 4 sessions with those squats, he gave up. The squats are no problem, he loves em, but the workouts themselves get the same symptoms as always.

Some ideas?

It seriously sounds to me like he has a bad case of Pussy-itis.

How are his eating habbits? and his sleeping? general lifestyle? If he sleeps 4 hours a night, eats 1,000 calories a day, and drinks and smokes, then he won't see much progres with any routine.

Eating is bad. But he can´t get it. Sleep, since two weeks he wakes up late night to pee, and since 2 week, he can´t sleep through the whole night, just some 2-3 hours naps. Some sleep distortions, combined with a strange pee problem. Can hold his piss for hours, but nearly immediately as he gets to bed, he has to pee. Don´t know what to do with him. Doctor, for sure. But what to tell a beginner who resignates at the "best" methods? Shall he do less sets? I mean, at the rippetoe programme he just did 3 sets. Okay, 3 squat sessions per week, fullbody. Too much?

It shouldn't be too much.....He should get the issue with pissing all night checked out by a Dr.......If the Ripptoe program was too much, it is probably a combination of poor nutrition/sleep and him just being a wuss.

Maybe try an upper/lower split. Mon-Tues-Thurs-Fri-type setup.

Yea, the upper/lower issue would be an alternative, i emailed rip but didn´t get an answer. Some ideas for a good u/l split?

I would do squats and pulls on Mon/Thurs and Presses and lat work on Tues/Fri. Stick in some biceps and triceps work after Fri's workout.

Pick up a copy of the book Body for Life by Bill Phillips. It'll seem REEEAALLY basic to you, but it covers all the bases - nutrition, water, workout, cardio, sleep AND MIND in a way a newb really understands. Let him work on that program for one to three challenges (12 week periods) before you start with the more advanced routines. Also, HE has to want it. It's great that you're interested and passing him info, but HE has to be the dude with the balls to get into the workout and eat, sleep, look after his own body. Like the poster says, "One Body, One Life"!

Good fortune to both of you!

I agree!

with regards to teaching the basics of working out, especially intensity using a number scale of perceived exertion, I think its invaluable. far too many people go through the motions and "well I worked out 4x last week" but with no intensity. if he walks away with anything, he'll have that. if he reads it with the interest of changing his habits, he can gain some decent nutrition foundations also. the 2 together: intensity and proper food intake will probably help him keep his motivation because he'll have energy and will probably start seeing results.

if he can hold his pee all day, but as soon as he hits the bed....maybe he doesn't like sleeping next to his wife?

kidding!
;)

Thanks to ya all. I still got no answer from rippetoe, regarding an upper lower split, but now i make it myself.

Seems to me he needs some short-term incentives. Tell him to get some stimulant - be it T-rex, Cardiobreeze or ephedrine to aid his workouts, and get some creatine, tell him he has to stick out the workouts for at least a month (time for creatine to kick in), then you need a plan to get him beyond that...
