DEADLIFTS ... I think I'm doing them wrong..

I was doing regular deadlifts yesterday and now my lower back is hurting a little bit.. :(
When doing deadlifts, is your back(upper body) supposed to go down first before your butt? or the reverse?
I did the reverse..

No. In the deadlift, there is no negative. It's all pulling up, locking out. Exercise done. Are you talking about lowering the weight back to the starting position ... ?

YES!

Well, it sounds like you tried to bring it down too slowly. Don't do that. Bring the bar down quickly, but in a controlled manner, so it that doesn't place any stress on your back. I'll see if I can find a vid somewhere for you.

If I'm not mistaken, the lower back is one of the targets of a deadlift. My lower back is usually sore (DOMS) after a deadlift workout.

Exactly my point. I think your lower back "IS" supposed to get a workout and be sore later on.

shit, just drop the bar if you have a deadlifting platform if not don't spend all day trying to lower it, yes your lower back is gonna get sore, remember ass down and head up and just stand up with a nice staright posture

I don't think my lower back though is hurting because of muscle soreness... I think it's probably because my back was arched instead of straight.. My form wasn't correct I guess.

Your back is supposed to be arched when doing deadlifts...do you mean rounded? If your back is rounding while you're doing them you should lower the weight and concentrate on form for awhile. With deadlifts especially, bad form can be dangerous.

rounding you mean like a hunchback???

I do deadlifts like I do all my exercises: low back slightly arched, stomach tight.

This sounds good. If this is how you're doing them (along with shoulders back) then your form probably isn't your problem.

By rounded, I meant your shoulders are slumped forward...hunchback is as good a way to describe it as any.

Back to the original intent of your post (as I took it), your hips and knees should lock out at approximately the same time. If your knees lock out too early, it's like you're doing a stiff-legged deadlift. This places more stress on your lower back (I believe). This tends to happen for me when I'm going really heavy. That's a sign for me to back off a little bit.

I meant I was having trouble going back to the starting position...

Thanks for your replies though:)
