Deadlifts and wearing gloves

the nature boy

New member
Do any of you guys wear gloves when you deadlift? I've been shredding the hell out of my hands because the bars at my gym are real rough :bawling:

Should I use lifting straps instead? I would have used straps earlier but I'd like to improve my grip strength. Any ideas?

I use gloves when I deadlift. Definetly protects the skin a bit. Straps might not be too bad as long as you work your grip strength independently. Try straps, try gloves, see how you like both of them (not necessarilary at the same time :) ).

I always use a good pair of gloves considering im in the gym for a good 10 hours a week. Dont want really want more calouses.

i think gloves are useless when deadlift. straps are a maybe. just use some chalk. once the calluses form you will be alright.

I recommend full length gloves. Protects your hands from nasty germs to some extent. Women don't like crocodile skin on their privates generally...like sandpaper.

i had to stop using gloves when i did my deadlifts. it felt ackward, like i didnt get my hands properly around the bar because of the gloves..i dunno..but i use gloves on most anything else...use chalk if you dont use gloves, it helps

Protect yourself from germs?? germs from where?

Gloves? Are you kidding me? My callouses increase my grip! My wife wears gloves in the gym but she's a girl! She is supposed to have soft hands. Although I'm beginning to wear a groove in the side of my cock from jerking off too much!

I only use chalk, I delight in the callouses that I've earned on both hands from heavy deads, I'm a social worker and I love the look of shock on someone's face when they shake my hand.

looks like we have differing opinons. I'll get some gloves and straps and try them individually. Either that or I'm going to buy a file and file down a bar to make it smoother or some shit.

Thanks for the input.

The alternating grip seemed to help me. I needed straps before I went to the alt. grip.

Problem with straps is the loss of the great forearm workout. But I must use straps when lifting over 550.:(

I use straps on my higher weights. I don't like the alternating grip technique, so I am forced to use straps if I go 500 and above.

I totally know what you're talking about. I do sumo deadlifts and the alternating grip messes me up big time.

This border's on obsessive/compulsive.

the alternate grip is no good if you are a bodybuilder..it messes up the symmetry and shape of your traps big time

Oh boy, we got a bunch of glove-wearing pansies.

Chalk only, spank you very much.

I find a mixed grip find for sumos.

Mrmuscle- if you are real concerned about the symetry problems just switch hands each set or each workout.

Calousses are cool! Leave the gloves for the girls and the pretty guys.

I wouldnt bother with gloves for much of anything unless you are a hand model or something - ha! Feel the bar and get them calluses going. Nothing like chalking up and gripping a loaded barbel...
