Deadlifts and cleans only for back?

I was thinking about doing Mark Rippetoes starting strength program, and the only back work in there is deadlifts and cleans (or you can row dynamic instead of cleans).

Would cleans and deads be enough to build a nice aesthetic back?

I'd personally row in addition to cleans...maybe even if it's just for assistence and for reps of 8-10 after the heavy shit is out of the way. I absolutely love Pendlay rows.

I think rows are good to keep in the mix, also. If my SQ/DL days are busy I can put them in as Bench assistance. Chest-supported rows are on the approved list at Westside Barbell, but I don't find them an advantage over Pendlays. You're still working the apposite force and also getting a better return.

If you run one cycle without rows or chinups, it won't kill you.

Deads will isometrically work the back, but that doesn't tend to be enough for more advanced lifters.

Power cleans will definitely give you development. Honestly, I say, go with the routine AS IS before you mess with it. That goes for basically any of these routines we've got - it'll definitely work well for you. Give it a month or two, see if you like the results. If you feel the need, throw in some chinups and/or rows for a few higher-repped sets once or twice a week.

Ahh, yep I'll have to amend my earlier post. I also strongly believe that if you're just starting a program it's important not to f*ck with it. It's more important to understand on a purely physical level what it is the program exactly does. Then when you have a working knowledge you can tailor it to fit your needs. You'll do this to all good programs, but why begin in the first place if you don't have confidence in the teacher's methods?

Apologies for not assimilating your post better. :coffee:
