The other day I decided to see what I could pull for 1 rep max, and I brought the camera along for the hell of it.
I'm always talking about not needing straps or a belt, note that I'm not using either in any pic.

This was an easy single on 550lbs, my bodyweight at the time was 210lbs.

Here is my halfway up with 575lbs, hard to look cool when you're working that hard

frorider, I'm somewhere between 5'8" and 5'9".

This is another on 575lbs, the shot was taken just before I locked out, but it gives you the idea.
I think I was capable of at least 600, but I haven't done a max single in about 2 1/2 years.
It's kind of hard to try and look big when you're standing there with that much weight

nice lift...and without any straps! My grip strength sucks, I could never do anything over 315 without straps.

Thanks guys, not bad for a bodybuilder I guess.
I want to work on the single max thing more though, I grew up looking at pics of Franco Columbo deadlifting 700+, I wont stop until I get there.
The plates in my gym suck though, those yuppie, plastic wrapped, octagon shaped pieces of crap, when you set the bar down between reps, it rolls to the flat spot and throws off your centre of gravity. Plus, they don't make any noise when they crash together during a really heavy set, I miss that sound!

I can only tell so much from a picture. Wait wait...first...let me say heck of a job!!!!!!!!!

Now...I can only tell so much from a picture...but this is what I see from looking at the first 575 pic.
You are not pushing out with your abs. You look like you are tucking them in. Push out man!!!

Your shoulders appear to be in front of the bar. They have got to be behind the bar man!!!

Your knees are pointing outwards. Keep them fwd. When your knees move outward from a conventional stance...you lose speed. Once you pull from the floor...you want to get mad acceleration.

You should be trying to pull back not up.

You need some flat sole shoes...Chucks!!!!!

Once again...one heck of a job, and I wish I could see a video of that or direct side pics of your lift.

B Fold, thanks for the advice. When pulling, I normally concentrate on keeping my hips down so my back doesn't round out, anything beyond that is gravy. I start with the bar touching my shins, and my hips as low as I can get them, so that when I pull I'm pulling back, and try to drag the bar up my shins to keep my centre of gravity close.
Not having gone for a max in years made it difficult to concentrate on form, but I'm going to incorporate more of it into my training from now on. I would like to video my deads and squats to watch my form.

There is no need to set the bar close to your shins. Seriously...no need at all. No need to drop your hips lower either...makes it harder actually.

Send me a pm or email me at [email protected] and I will give you my real email addy...and tons of literature to read.

I'm already on your mailing list, I'll drop you a line

haha...ok. I get real names mixed up with elite names all the time.

Read the deadlift article I should have sent you today then!!!!

Needsize, Congrats Bro, that is a great accomplishment for a man of any size... I wonder what you could do if you actually trained for a one rep max. I went to work out back today in my gym and i started to do some deads after seated rows and pull-ups. I started repping out 135 for warmup then 225 for 12 then 305 for ten by thast time I was seeing the flopaty things you see when you aren't breathing enough. I took a little break and came back and did 365 for 4 clean reps, I figure if you could push yourself that hard no use in babying myself. Should have seen the looks of the other members (school gym).... Thanks for motivation..

Good job suston. The other members were probably looking at you because they didn't know what a deadlift was, lol. I used to get looks in the gym from doing heavy deads. Some guy almost creamed his pants when I did 4 plates. I was like wtf is the matter with him? Not too may hardcore deadlifters/squatters at the gym when I went there(morning).

Tell me about it, for all i know they could of thought I was doing some weird kind of shrugs... That's the problem with college gyms everyone is doing curls and bench... All with bad form, and egoes everywhere trying to impress people they don't know. I mean c'mon wifebeaters and windpants with frosted hair all slicked back. It makes me sick, but it also motivates me in a perverse sort of way... I don't socialize, I am staring to find solace in the clanging of plates and the burn I feel when my body says no but i do one more anyways....

Haha, I love the description about the wifebeaters and frosted hair. LMAO PLenty of those guys in the gym I was going to and plenty of girls wearing too much makeup and not lifting weights. Like it's a social place to hang out or something.

Glad to be back in my home gym, my little dungeon in the basement. Chalk everywhere, heavy music cranking and none of those people described above to annoy me with their presence.

I wish, The gym is free and its there in between my classes so why not use it. Tday i just got out from lab too late. Me and my roomate look like we are going to salvation army to get clothes cause hal our shit is huge and ripped and frayed. We don't really car I lift in long sleeves and sweats or shorts with boots on... Always wearing a hat with glasses, like a little Nasser Sonbaty lol.... The only thing that bothers me is when people stared at you when you do compound movements like: Deads, Squats, Clean-and-Jerk, Bent over rows... Its like they have never seen those lifts before.... I guess ignorance is bliss.... But then agan I don't want bliss

needsize-fucking HYOOG you are, man. jeesus H. congrats on the lift. this week I am back in the gym.

b fold-thanks for posting the tips, I will be emailing you shortly for some advice on deadlifting.

B Fold, I already read the article, great stuff, I'm going to have to re-evaluate some of my form.

Suston, thanks, myself I generally don't go over 5 reps on the dead very often, but about a month ago, I did 3 sets of 5 on 500lbs, then dropped to 405lbs and did a set of 9 reps, I think it almost killed me, great work.

People's Champ, thanks, it's funny though, as soon as you hit a big goal like that, all of a sudden it's not good enough by far.

Deceiver:

Good job, that's a great start at 14.

Why are your legs so far apart, and why are you deadlifting in SOCKS? Also it looks like the belt is way up almost on your chest. That's still a hell of a lot more than I could do at 14 though.

B fold:

I just read an article on testosterone.net that says sucking in your gut on compound lifts using your back (eg squats, deads) is what will make your spine more rigid. This allows your transversus Abdominis to increase Intra-Abdominal pressure. Check it out:

Read that article a few days ago. Plain and simple...you are stronger when you take in "big air" and hold it...and push your stomach outwards...into your belt if you have one on.

joncrane. i deadlift sumo because i have more power that way, i deadlift in socks, just because it gets me that tiny bit lower to the ground that may make or break my lift. the belt appears so high because i angle it upwarsd in the front to make a snug fit, and also my upper abs come out a bit further than the rest, so when i take in a big breath it makes it tighter too

Thanks guys, don't know if I can handle the pressure of being any kind of inspiration.......j/k, I only posted these to back up my claims that belts and straps are not necessary.
