Deadlift grip question

I've always done deadlifts with an over/over grip, however 99% of the people I see doing them using an over/under grip. Just curiuos as to why people use that grip...perhaps it provides for a better grip on the bar?

For me I just feel more comfortable with the over/over grip.

I would say that it provides a way to hold the bar when the weight gets really heavy as it can't roll out of your grip. I'm just starting to incorporate deads and I'm using an over/over grip as I don't want to mess up my biceps (the over/under grip apparently can do this).

I really think this is a personal preference thing. I don't know about you, but when I'm going for a max, and I don't want to drop the bar, I'll hold it any way I think I can get the job done.

I don' tthink you can possibly hold high weights in an over over grip. Your grip will give out LONG before your legs and back with an over over grip. (Unless you are using straps... which I am really against for deadlifts.)

Personaly, I use straps, so grip strength isn't that important....I know I know...drop the straps, however if I do my grip will fail FAR before my back would.

Even with an over-under grip? Or just with the over-over grip?

People who use an over/under grip:

Do you switch which hand is over and which is under or just keep it the same all the time. I switch personally.

I do my heavy sets over under... then switch to under over for a higher rep set. I figure that close enough balances things out.

I've always used over/over until the bar started to fall out of my hands, then switched to over/under. When training submaximally, I always use over/over.

I use over / under, then under / over, repeat.

I never use straps, the only assist I use is chalk, so over over I would drop the weight for sure. 365 is hard to barehand, but damn it works the forearms ;)

most i ever deadlifted for reps was 350, for 3 reps, and i used over/under with chalk and had no grip problems.

re: switching from over/under to under/over

anybody remember that study that was done where the subjects only trained one half of their body..and the other half also grew (thought not quite as much)? makes me think that the 'imbalance' between using one or the other would be miniscule

Great signature Jeremy. lol I agree about "rolling out" but to explain, I think that the force you exert when pulling off the floor may "roll" the bar towards you with an over over grip. Just from your hands opening up a little bit from the initial pull. You don`t get that with O/U.

Well at least MY hands are barely holding the bar towards the end of my set (with just 4 fingers), but it still feels safe. My weights are`nt too high yet.

I use the over/over grip too with straps, I find that over/under uses different muscles in either side of the arms, I dont like that.

It also feels a uncomfortable for me trying to do that. I have no problems pushing close to 400 over/over with straps, and my forearms usually blow out around there too, so its win win IMO.
