Is one particularly better than the other for gaining mass, or are they basically equivalent.

The only issue with DB's is that you can't handle as much weight as a barbell. They are certainly great but will lag the barbell variation for effectiveness in the vast majority of cases. That said, they absolutely have their uses and you aren't forced to pick one (but if it were either all DB or all BB - you should absolutely go BB).

you tuck your shoulders when benching?
Golden rule - make sure you've thoroughly checked the area and removed obstacles before lifting. I saw a similar accident that resulted in a crushed hand - I've always been meticulous after that point.mayhems said:hmm i tend to use BB now after i sliced my index finger open using DB's... some idiot left a 25 tucked under the bench so when i threw the 45s down it got caught and sliced open.. 5 stitched so im no to keen on using DBs
Amen to that.Madcow2 said:Golden rule - make sure you've thoroughly checked the area and removed obstacles before lifting. I saw a similar accident that resulted in a crushed hand - I've always been meticulous after that point.
