(by Charles Dickens - with one 'k')

Anyway do you know this story? It is interesting in many respects.

Here's just one. He has this friend for years - Agnes. When he gets to be a young man he gets the hots for some 'bit of fluff' that he drools all over to Agnes, marries the 'bit of fluff' her...they are at odds from day 1 over his expectations of her and she dies before too long, of illness...

Then he finally realizes that he loves Agnes who loved him all along...(and knew it)

At least that story had a happy ending...

You oughtta read it...if you can... :p

You might learn something. :)

p.s. my apologies about 'bit of fluff' - i'm sure she was a very special person. Meant to signify that the wind could blow her away...she was very delicate in constitution.

I thought he was gay magician married to Claudia Schiffer??!!

Dickens originally wanted to write it about the magician, but then he threatened to sue for defamation of character, but he retained the name for the story and it was tied up in the courts for a long time.
and I don't think he is still married to claudia schiffer.
she got old and he traded her in for a used nissan altima.

personally I didn't like it much. Had to do a big report on it in High School.

One I liked (Warning: I like "different" than the norm .....dark stories) ETHAN FROME

Give me Hawthorne or Melville any day over Dickensian tripe.
The almost fugue-like, page-long sentences of Melville always get me with their craftsmanship.

I've heard that's good - haven't read it though.

Having to do a report on something in High School is enough to put anyone off it...i think the only reason i liked reading in high school was i'd already discovered the joys of it so what they did to me in English class (i hated it, mostly) didn't put me off...

You might want to try again...Dickens is actually the funniest author i know. Not a lot of people seem to know how funny his books are, actually.

Still, i guess he's not gonna be everyone's taste even if high school didn't put them off...

(what kills me about high school English lit apart from dissecting good books in scary ways i could never do - is reading plays for Christs sake. I mean...who on earth ever writes a play to be READ not WATCHED. Cmon, let's get REAL here... )

Helen...

see I loved reading shakespear....Hamlet was my favorite.

Ethan Frome, is not for everyone, but it left me with a feeling I normally don't have. I like things that make me feel in a new unfamiliar way.

Copperfield, was ok, don't get me wrong, but didn't stike me as anything different.

Also, The Awakening, by Kate Chopin was a pretty good decriptive piece of work. I'm not big on highlly descriptive writers, because they usually don't touch me, and cause me to lose interest and scan over the words. But the Awakening was about a woman, and self realization, and the descriptions were perfect and intriguing.
