what's the scientific basis behind these?

I've never had them but i hear they're caused by alien life forms who use advanced methods of travel to get into women's bedrooms at night and cause this phenomenon.

I seem to notice they happen as a result of a lack of sleep. I've pulled plenty of all-nighters, and despite chasing away those pesky aliens every damned time, I still get those dark circles. It's obviously caused by an invisable artificially created vertaron particle field emanating from a localized tear in subspace.
