damn chest!

i strained my left pec about 2-3 weeks ago, not too bad. still able to do close grip bench and incline. so the other day im doing chest, but just a light incline workout. i go up to 225(275is usually my first set for 10 reps) and do just 2 reps and my right side is now strained. WTF! i dad planned on doing slow slow controlled reps at 225. i dont over train, i dont go heavier than i should. im not sure how the hell it happened. i guess im looking for recovery advice, or maybe some input on why it may have happened . thanks guys.

You incline 275 right away without warming up with lighter sets? If that's the case, which I don't think it is, that would be why you're injured. What do you mean by "strained"? Probably a small tear in the blood vessles resulting in weakness or swelling, or minor detatchment, I'm assuming. I am not giving you medical advice personally, but rest, movement restriction, nsaids, and ice are the most common treatments for muscle "strain".

no no, i always warm up. thats just my first set after my warm up. my chest didnt swell or bruise. just hurts pretty bad when i do chest. starts at the armpit. thanks for the reply!

Sorry about you injury bro, I know how hard it is to stay away from the gym. I hate when that shit happens, because there is nothing I love more than lifting. Seriously though, make sure you rest it and work on legs and abs or something for a couple weeks. You don't want a torn peck, and it's way more likely to happen with your type of injury!

work around it. cut the weight, increase the time under tension, use machines, use hammer strength machines. focus on the eccentric and concentric and just cut the weight. no reason to not train chest.

I take it you've never seen a torn pectoral muscle. Two weeks is better than two months. I could not train chest for two weeks without losing any strength, I'd probably be stronger.

tearing would require bruising and blood pooling. he strained it which means he could train around it. its active recovery, nothing dangerous about it.

I have the same problem. Especially on dips, my right pec hurts every single rep, and not a good hurt. I dont know if I should just plain stop for awhile, or try to work through it. Its been constant for almost a month now. Not horrible pain, but its definately there.

A muscle "strain" is a minor muscle tear, which is what is causing his pain and weakness. I guess you didn't know that and couldn't understand what I was talking about in my original statement. There is no bruising because he didn't damage enough tissue (yet) which is a good thing. I'm not saying I'm right, he might train around it and be fine, nothing's ever a certain thing with the human body, except death. In my experience, good advice is precautionary, not careles.

youre pretty condescending in your posts, thats cool. if i stopped training for every minor injury or "strain" over the last 21 years ive been at this i would have taken off 6 months every year. training around injuries is part of the game. but i guess you couldnt understand that because you probably havent been a strength and conditioning coach who has worked with plenty of well known trainers and rehabilitation specialists who have taught you how to work through and around injuries. in my experience, knowing what youre talking about helps when you give out advice.

It would be idiotic in my opinion to tell someone to work around an injury on the internet without a physical examination, plain and simple. I'm in pain everyday of my life because of weight training, joint pain, muscle soreness, tiredness, extreme hunger, ect. I am a bodybuilder, which I know isn't healthy, because it's extreme. I wouldn't advise anyone to do what I do, it's an idividual choice I've made. I would probably keep training if I were him, too. As far as advice goes though, I think a couple weeks off isn't bad advice at all. It's the safe thing to do. I'm not trying to be mean, I like everyone on here, including you. I'm glad that he can come here and get different opinions, and that way he can make his own decision.

i would try any exercises where you feel no discomfort. keep the weight low to moderate and keep the sets low. see where you are in a week or two. if you arent getting progressively better, which could be a slow/long process, then time off may be warranted. could post by scotty. he is correct in his assertion.
