Well if you want to stay away from the social club scene, I would advise avoiding both 24 Hour Fitness and Ballys. I train at the latter, and I generally have to pay a cover to get in unless I bring a shitload of chicks with me. Once they stamp my hand, give me the wristband, and let me in, it's usually not too bad unless it's Ladies' Night, in which case it's packed because they give out free carb drinks to all females who get there before 11. The bouncers who are stationed at the entrances, both squat racks, and the spinning room are pretty friendly, but they don't say much and are usually surrounded by sweaty hos or throwing stick boys out of the place for trying to curl in the squat rack. On the other hand, the bartenders are usually very cordial, but there's generally a line just to get to them and get your cup of water, which is usually not a problem because I only head up there in between sets. That and I can always rub my sweaty self on girls who are in line and say I got pushed. The music is decent and mildly motivating, however I have been pushing to get the dance floor moved from the freeweights area to the aerobics section where it belongs. I can't tell you how many times I've come back from getting some water and next thing I know I've got a glowstick in my mouth and I'm grinding with some hottie till the breaka breaka dawn and I completely forget that I was up on a set of deads. The place has its advantages and disadvantages. I'd go with the one gympoppa recommended, but Hurst is probably going to be too far of a drive.
