D*n*p ??

DNP is highly toxic. Physicians in the 1940's used to prescribe it for weight loss for a short time...until too many people started dying.
DNP causes Hydrogen ions to be able to cross the mitochondrial inner membrane without using the ATP synthase port. Electron transport continues, but ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production stops. Simply, ATP is a carrier of energy; it's how our bodies store energy so we can recognize and use this energy. This is why you feel tired and lethargic.
Because the H+ ions "leak" through the membrane, the gradient required for ATP synthesis is dissipated. Cells continue to consume Oxygen at a high rate, but they cannot make any more ATP. This is why your workouts were shit because you had no energy.
DNP halts chemiosmosis, consuming ALL fuel molecules, and almost all the energy is lost as heat. DNP is a poison. Eventually it poisons the system to the point that you die. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

Agreed!

ceo: it was the 30s not the 40s, and discontinuation occurred because of cataract formation, not death

dnp is a useful drug.....in a clinical setting....

out here in home-brew land, though...i would bet anything that almost every capsule out there is misdosed. heck i have a hard enough time doing it right, and im trained!

dnp is one of thsoe things i wish duchaine never dragged out of the past

in a clinical setting, sure, why not, but i was on fitnessgeared reading about a guy who was taking daily doses of about 800mg a day...i was waiting for the posts to stop because i thought he was going to die

normal people are not nearly cautious enough.

even those who 'only' take 200mg a day as their first ever dose are taking 4x more than i would like to see them take. this is one of the most unforgiving drugs out there, and a hypersensitivity to it will be fatal at 200mg a day

anyway ill stop ranting now

One of the studies I saw was for an obese woman running 200mg/day EOD and 100mg/day the other days. She was also on 100mcg of T3. She was on this protocol for at least 1 year.

i know. there are also other people who have used upwards of 800mg a day and have felt crappy, but survived. on the other hand, people have died on their third dose of 400.

dnp is cheap. dirt cheap. i dont see why people get so damn greedy and just HAVE to lose 15lbs in 8 days, and risk hospitalisation/death to do so, especially since they cant trust their product. im normally a fan of the slowly, slowly approach with meds, but in the case of dnp im a fanatic

Steroids are pretty useful in a clinical setting also. Many would argue that most of us on this board are risking are lives playing with steroids. They could argue that it causes heart disease, high blood pressure, infections, screw up your lipid profile, make madman out of normally sane people. That some are so addicted that they will sell their bodies to get these drugs.

My god, why would anybody want to subject their bodies to this.

But of course we argue that we use them responsibly and with care. We take precautions to reduce side effects.

The same goes for DNP. The biggest concern for people starting is the risk of allergic reaction. But if you are not prone, then using the product prudently with the proper ancillaries, it is very safe and effective. Luckily there is lots of info on these boards as I mentioned. Just read it and study and DNP can be an effective tool.

dont know about that one buckwheat. use roids incorrectly, and really, youre staring down the barrel of hypoganadism, hrt, libido problems, and a few other cosmetic dramas (hair, tits). sure some more sinister things happen (cancer) but really, thats very very rare

thing about dnp is that if you screw it up, its all over. youre dead. its not just an allergic reactin you need to worry about, its overdose. allergic reactions are ok- you get some swelling, go the the hospital, get a jab of adrenalin and an antihistamine, and there you go. overdose on dnp, and youre well and truly fucked.

dnp and roids are two very different animals. the only way i can kill you quickly with roids is to break the ampule and slash your wrists. dnp though....screw up the capping process and see you later

Where do people get this crap? The Lyle Alzado School of Unbelievable Bullshit & Unsubstantiated Hyperbole?

After reading a lot of posts and logs about DNP on various bodybuilding forums, it seems that most people who died or nearly died did so for one of the following reasons:

1) Dehydration
A lot of people get dehydrated on DNP without realizing it. Add in activity in a hot environment, alcohol or other diuretics and you can easily put yourself in danger. Also when people go to the hospital from the effects of DNP, doctors often treat it like other poisons and administer diruretics to flush it out of the body. If you're already dehydrated, this can kill you.

2) Allergic reaction
Supposedly 5 to 10% of the population is allergic to DNP. Most only get hives and rashes, but a few have extreme allergic reactions. Like severe nut or shellfish allergies these can be fatal.

3) Overdose
If you take enough DNP, it will kill you. However from the accounts I've read, it's not clear if this is from excessive heat within the body or from cellular death due to lack of ATP. I've heard of hospitals giving ice water baths and enemas in DNP overdoses to keep the internal body temperature from going too high. Some claim that you can never completely run out of ATP as there are alternative ways for it to be formed. Perhaps someone else can provide more info on this.

Based on the reading, I'd guess that dehydration and allergic reactions account for most of the deaths or hospitalizations. Of course there are fools out there that like to experiment with very high dosages (>1000mg) or try to 'out eat' DNP that also end in the hospitals. Maybe someone with access to medical databases can give us some hard numbers.

taken from http://www.quackwatch.org/02ConsumerProtection/FDAActions/bachynsky.html:

In the July 15, 1933, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), three Stanford University researchers reported that patients receiving daily oral doses of 3 to 5 milligrams of dinitrophenol per kilogram of body weight experienced steady weight reduction without demonstrable side effects.

In the Sept. 30, 1933, issue of JAMA, three San Francisco physicians described a severe skin reaction in a woman who had taken dinitrophenol for 14 days.

in 1934 an estimated 100,000 persons took the drug for weight reduction. More than 1,200,000 capsules were dispensed from a single clinic in San Francisco.

In April 1935, a virtual epidemic of cataracts began to occur, predominantly in young women who had been taking dinitrophenol. Some cases showed up months or years after the last dose of the drug had been taken. Tragically, once started, changes in the eye's lens progressed rapidly until vision was obscured. Dr. Warren D. Homer, a San Francisco ophthalmologist and one of the first to report dinitrophenol-related cataracts, estimated that more than 164 people were affected.

In 1938, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was enacted, giving FDA the power to take action against drugs that are dangerous even when used in the recommended dosage. Subsequently, the agency included dinitrophenol in a list of drugs potentially so toxic that they should not be used even under a physician's supervision.

[...]

The doctor, Nicholas Bachynsky, operates a chain of "Physicians Clinics" throughout Texas and in several other states. Until last December the mainstay of his weight-loss program in Texas was dinitrophenol, which he dispensed under the trade name Mitcal. According to his advertising brochures, Russian-born Bachynsky learned of dinitrophenol in 1963 while translating Russian medical journals for the U.S. government. The Russians used it to keep soldiers warm in winter, he learned. The main side effect reported was weight loss.

Although Bachynsky's brochure stated, "There have been no fatalities associated with Mitcal," the consent form patients were asked to sign lists among the potential risks of his treatment "blood clots in veins and lungs; cataract formation; hemorrhage; allergic reactions; and even death." This apparently wasn't enough to dissuade prospective patients. As many as 14,000 people were treated at Bachynsky's clinics, according to court papers.

----------------------

out of more than 100000 users, ~150 developed cataracts and we don't know what these people were also using back in the 1930s. this calling an "epidemic" is grossly overblown. the FDA wanted more powers and they used DNP as one of many tools for getting it.
14000 users in 1984 and not a single fatality, only "sides" reported were fever, shortness of breath, dizziness and sweating. duh, thats what DNP is supposed to do.
allergies were never cited as an adverse reaction, maybe allergies in general are a quite new thing not widely known in the 30s, but thats the only thing i would look out for. otherwise i will continue to use DNP without thinking twice.
