cushion for squats

Is there any advantage to not using any kind of cushion or wrapping on the bar when you're squatting? I currently use that cause i dont like the feeling of my back getting all cut up and sometimes bruised. I don't use a belt or knee wraps at all, just the pad on the bar. any info/data would be much appreciated.

This thread will likely evolve into several people calling you a pussy for padding the bar. "Gotta feel the iron on your back" kinda stuff. It's happened before.

It's strictly a comfort issue, a personal preference. Wrapped or unwrapped, it will not affect your progress.

I have a small, thin towel that I wrap around the center of the bar.
Helps a lot. Pads feel unstable.

I also use Dunroy knee supports. No knee pain.
Protects the hammys too.

Well, i've never had any problems with knee pain, but i have had problems with balance at some points, especially when i first was getting my form down, i was trying not to lean too much forward. I guess i'll give the towel a shot on wednesday and see if there's any difference.

Yes i would normally make fun, but no, i understand it does hurt if it's not place properly.

There is a natural divet (sp?) / depression in your traps where the bar should ride, that's a good spot for it and it doesn't hurt. You might try it with light weights or on a smith machine, when you find the sweet spot, your gold.

Place the bar properly on your back to avoid it hurting. You'll also toughen up to it after a few weeks.

You run the risk of the bar slipping putting anything between it and you. I feel much more sturdy when it's braced against me, and me alone.

Another thing i forgot was when squatting, make sure you pinch your traps together, this creates somewhat of a shelf for the bar to ride on and keeps the weight from feeling heavy.

But you have to have some traps in order for this to work, unlike one of my partners...

lol thats funny! And no it doesent hurt me unlease i do it on a smith machine because u have to turn the bar to take it off on everyone ive seen. If i use anything its the shirt i have on my back, i just pull up the collar some and its fine.
