Curls question - standing or sitting?

Hi,

First time back in gym in about 2 weeks due to funeral, travel, illness, and work. I don't feel justified in looking at this message board when haven't been going, so it's nice to be back on.

What are the benefits of doing curls standing versus sitting?

I do my DB shoulder press standing, and pretty much any excercise I prefer to do standing because it feels better that way. I don't use my legs to cheat or anything, and keep my back straight and steady, almost in squat position.

Any thoughts?

You tend to use less momentum when sitting since your body can't sway back and forth. Though you can still cheat while seated if you work at it. Basically my thoughts are that seated curls are more an isolation and standing are more for weight.

Cheers,

You can also try using a split stance (one leg in front of the other) when standing to avoid swaying or leaning back.

Another technique is to lean forward slightly when standing - keeps you from leaning back (obviously) and keeps tension on the biceps, eliminating the little break you give your bis at the top of a regular standing curl.

Or you can try your barbell curls standing with your back against a wall and keeping flat against the wall for the entire set. These are tough puppies..........its all arms when you do this.
