I recently crossed the Mexican border (by walking through customs instead of driving back). Nowadays be prepared to go through 2 checkpoints; the first is just looking at you and the second checkpoint inputting your driver's license info. in a computer and typing in your responses to their questions:
"How often do you visit Mexico?"
"How long were you visiting today?"
"What was your business there?"
"Did you purchase anything?"
Pretty standard questions, and I've heard them before (2+ years ago). The only thing I thought everyone should know is that suspicion may arise if one is down there "too much".
There was a line that people were randomly sent to, and their property was searched as well as their bodies (with metal detectors and checking pockets etc...).
On other occasions when I drove there and back, all I did was show my ID. Though one occasion it took me 2.5 hours to get back and I was questioned alot (there was some sort of bomb threat). They even tapped on the body panels of my car and inspected the trunk. They looked into my car from the outside.
Call me paranoid, I'll say I'm just cautious...
