Oh, while we're on the subject of offroad capabilities, a good driver means just as much if not more than the vehicle. I took my old S-10 Blazer, with 235/75/15s and sagging rear suspension and busted torsion bar mounts, offroad quite a few times, and I don't have much offroading experience. A lot of it is just basic common sense, which eludes most people.
Went out with a friend a few times and we hit some areas on trails that he said I'd never get through yet I proved him wrong. Large rocks scattered everywhere, fallen trees (1 foot diameter was pretty much my limit), large ruts, you name it, I got through where an idiot would have gotten stuck or broke something.
Hit the end of one trail that was blocked off with rocks so large that no offroad vehicle could've gone over. My only options were to crawl through a ditch that was a foot or so deep and 2 feet wide or drive in reverse for 1/4 mile to get off the trail. I pulled through on an angle amazingly, with only 3 tires on the ground at any given time and nothing more than AT tires. The only thing that had me worried was the fact that I was in the middle of nowhere, cell reception was shoddy at best, and I had my son with me. Had I of gotten stuck, we would have been hiking out over a mile to get back to a main road.
I need a good offroader. Don't have the money right now though. Friend bought a mid70s K5 Blazer not too long ago for $750. Slightly worked 350, 4spd, lifted, and I think 35" tires. Body is in great shape, engine is strong as hell, he basically stole it for what he paid. It's gonna be fun going out with him in that. Already told him we have to take my son with us because he loves hitting the trails. He just stares out the window in amazement.
