Court OKs Random Drug Tests in Schools

ok, let's look at it another way. say someone is using heavily and often, then they go onto the field and falls out. he dies and then who's going to get slack. the coach and the school. why, because the kid has this episode on school property or in a school sponsored event. the testing gives the coaches a chance to get the kid clean. if the kid refuses then they are off the team. the test results don't go to the police nor should they go to the parents either. it's just between them, the coach and the principal. the ones who oppose this are the ones using. should schools want to represented by a drug user? they have every right not to be. i think a better way would be to make them voluntary. if you have nothing to hide then you have no worries. just list any prescript drugs you might be on.

fantom, though i see your point, what about safety to others? someone who's high on pcp can go apesh** and hurt someone. does'nt that concern anyone either. these kids can and do get their paws on some nasty stuff these days. it's everywhere. but again, it should be voluntary rather than madatory.

I can see it now..... in 10 years there's someone knocking at my door at 3 AM. Who is it? It's the drug cop with a dixie cup to take my urine sample!

I used to think those conspiracy people that talked about black helicopters were nut cases, now I think they are wise men. :(

Dude, has turning liberal killed the logical thought you once had? Look at things today. If we are going to implement a mandatory random drug testing program in schools, then obviously there is a problem. Do you see kids dropping like flies on the football field? No... the only kids you see dying from drug abuse are those who are BLATANT drug users that don't need a test to confirm that they're druggies. What kind of athletes do you see dying from drug use? The ones who think it's a good idea to overdose on DNP and then run for 3 hours on a treadmill with no water and wearing a sweat suit or some stupid shit like that. Face it, there is no reason to implement a mandatory drug testing program at this time because THERE IS NO PROBLEM TO FIX.

I oppose this, and I'm not a user. I believe that everyone has the right to do whatever he wants as long as it does not have direct adverse effects on someone else. Some kid smoking a little weed after school or going on a test cycle to get as big as the other guys on his team isn't hurting anyone - including himself.

Our country is represented by drug users every 4 years at the Olympics. Our ex-President experimented/used drugs at some point in his life. Our current President experimented/used drugs at some point in his life. Do you see where I'm going with this? Compare this with atheism or homosexuality. Do you want your school or your country to be represented by an atheist? By a homosexual? Why does it matter? All that matters is what the person does while he's representing his country/school. As long as the guy isn't smoking a joint, dissing God, or fucking someone in the ass while he's on the field, there is no problem.

Are you serious? This will resolve nothing.

Scenario 1: Guy is a drug user. Guy will obviously not volunteer for a test.
Scenario 2: Guy is not a drug user. Guy has no reason to volunteer for a test. If guy does volunteer for a test, taxpayer money is wasted to test a guy who obviously doesn't use drugs because he volunteered for a test. Woohoo... bad for taxpayers, good for liberals. Spend more money this year = ask for more money next year.

Big deal. Someone who just got fired, caught his wife cheating on him, lost his son in a car accident, and had his dog bite him on the same day can go even more apeshit and hurt someone or himself. Does that mean we need to ban jobs, wives, sons, cars, and dogs? Please. People need to be held responsible for their actions - not their potential actions. Hold people responsible for their crimes - not their "oh maybe they will commit this crime in the future... let's get them." This isn't fucking Minority Report here. This is real life.

Public schools are a wasteland. A nice place to lose your drive, vision, and aspiration.

If you send your kids to the government school you are fucking crazy.

Sushi, your horror story is so unrealistic it just might scare someone into thinking we should implement this.

Drugs are not bad. Abusing drugs is bad, and addiction is tragic.

Why don't we admit that drug enforcement is just a way to come down on poor people harder than the rest of us, to help America not have to deal with the,

"Give them jail, demoralize them, then give them jail again, and they won't revolt against a system screwing them".

But they will.

oh please, public schools are not a wasteland, well maybe in some states they are. Where I live the public schools rank pretty high, so saying there a wasteland is incorrect.

the point i was trying to make is there are two sides to the story. the safety issue is one thing overlooked. privacy is the key issue people complain about. i do like my privacy so don't get me wrong. i do not support madatory testing, i do support voluntary. maybe that won't solve anything but it's a start. maybe we should start testing all athletes?

matt's right though, drugs are'nt bad. abusing them is and addiction is worse. drugs have their plave but not at the work place, in schools, school sponsored events and such. places where safety is a concern, much like not getting drunk before work or smoking a cigarette while working at a methane plant. :)

The problem I have with this initiative is tha schools will NOT "randomly" test people. They will test those who act, dress or talk differently from the other students. Dye your hair purple? Then you're obviously a druggie, let's test you twice a day for the next year! But that guy over there in A&F chinos, noooo, he doesn't do drugs...

My experience of school is that 2/3 of the staff are sad bastards who try to control and play mind games with young children and teenagers because they cannot deal with adults. They used every rule as a way of persecuting those who were different, whether it was accent, hairdo, skin colour, religion... I see this as leaving the way wide open for non-stop harrassment of those percieved to be different.

Meanwhile, my knowledge of drug abuse is that it is NOT confined to pothead surfer dudes, rock'n'roll goth/metal types, and the odd hippy chick. In fact, most of the heavy drug users I have met have been very mainstream types. Whereas the surfers etc smoked the odd joint, the Gap Kids took coke, e, speed, everything you can think of, every saturday night. Some friends of mine had serious problems with people taking drugs and selling them on the premises of their bar, a bar which catered mainly to highschool and post-highschool types (drinking age is 18 here). A great many people use and abuse illegal drugs a lot of the time. I happen not to be one of them. However, many people accuse me of being a "druggie hippy" simply because I enjoy wearing long flowers skirts/daisy chains in hair/fishnet etc.

I see this initiative as pointless, in that it will not stop people taking drugs. And that's the aim isn't it? It will merely allow schools to say we are doing something while the dealing goes on in the toilets....

Well, ask yourself if you are being biased.

Your statement is ambiguous - do you mean that your local public schools are better than most public schools, or they provide an education comparable to provate schools, or what?

Did you attend public school?

I grew up on Long Island, where the public schools rival anything in the country. I attended public school for about 8 years, then some private school locally, and then an exclusive private school in New Hampshire.

Public schools are free. The private school was about $3500 per year (in early 90's). The boarding school was $18,000 in 1993. It was my observation that in education, you get exactly what you pay for. The public schools (excellent ones, mind you) lagged far behind their private counterparts.
