counter strike on 56k dial-up

I may be moving to a college town soon, and i don't know if i can get DSL or cable. They are both $45 a month, which isn't bad but i dont know if the area i'll be in has DSL, or if the cable will actually be fast.



Anyway, my question is has anyone played Day of Defeat, Counter Strike or Team Fortress (all Half-Life multiplayer MODs) on a 56k dial-up? what was it like, what is your ping. Is it worth spending the extra $25 a month to get cable or DSL?

Defintately, I can't even imagine using the internet or gaming without a fast connection.
