Corticosteroids before competition

Does anyone have experience with the use of corticosteroids before competition? I have heard of cyclists taking them before a Time Trial for PED benefits. I believe it helps raise your HR and dulls pain when you are going all out. I am curious what others have taken, when they take it and the mg per lbs.

Cheers~ :eyes:

Only used when had an injury and was still some issues during season. Would take a couple days off then be back a lot sooner. Always helped in that respect but I wouldn't use them before a competition.

Sent from my DROID3 using EliteFitness

Yea, its interesting that they keep coming up in testimony over Lance's doping. Here is some info I found...

Corticosteroids (e.g., cortisone). These drugs reduce inflammation, assist in recovery and can provide a burst of energy and create a temporary feeling of increased energy and well-being. Throughout the relevant time period, corticosteroids were improperly provided to cyclists by team doctors and trainers to increase energy and enhance performance. …

Yes. First time yesterday in a cycling team time trial.
2mg of dexamethasone and actually felt really good. Not jittery like ephedrine but amped up and ready to go. I also noticed my HR actually was down on what it usually did. Woke up this morning after a smash fest tt yesterday, fresh as a daisy and ready to race a crit today. Rode heard out the front all day and only when I stopped did I notice the severe pain from the area where my ham strings join my backside.

Nikko, thanks for the info. I have Prednisone and from what I read it is not as strong as Dexamethasone. I also have a TT coming up this weekend and was looking to give it a try. From what I read Dexamethasone is between 2 and 10 times stronger then Prednisone. Have you or any of your teammates tried Prednisone for a TT? If so, what dosage?

We are not in the habit of sharing doping info. Lol
Personally I would next time even double the dose of dex so you may be wasting your time if the pred is not as strong. Always worth a try though. Be keen to hear how it goes.

There are readily available studies on use of prednisone 1 week before competition. Increases LT and endurance.

What I meant is we don't readily admit to each other what each other may be on at any given time.

bikeracer, thanks for the info, can you point me towards those studies? Also, do you have any experience with Prednisone/Corticosteroids?

wow I can't believe what I'm hearing in this thread.

cortico's will fuck you up long term. if you want to be crippled for life then go ahead and use them so you can improve your time a few seconds
I agree and we are not talking about using for a long term. The use of corticosteriods can be used for one day to improve endurance. Maybe use only once or twice per quarter for a day at a big event, that's it. As far as I know, this little bit of use will not f*ck you up.

I think Steves is right. And in all cases make a check up of your glycemia before using it. If you have a diabete you don't know it and you take those drugs you can go into a coma for hyperglicemia.
I have heard about some people who use corticosteroids some weeks before competitions and they said they take Testosterone to contrast the bad effects of cortisone such as "muscles burn"....

lets say u have an injury (even something minor) and take the cortico before an event and it tells ur brain there is no injury.. or during the event u get an injury.. you most certainly can cause more damage during the event and not even know it .. the power to feel pain is ur #1 thing as an athlete to keep from sustaining long term/chronic injuries.. taking that away is a huge risk

nfl athletes lineup before a game for PK's, but they r paid big bucks and if they dont get out there they will find someone else who will.. they r willing to be crippled later in life so they take of their families.. atleast some of them r

i've heard of guys who take ibuprofen before weight training or endurance sports.. absolutely crazy. you WANT inflammation, that is your body healing itself. you take that away and goodbye joints, tendons, etc.

Some of the other side effects of repeated (not ongoing) use of corticosteroids can be a weakening of connective tissue, a loss of bone mass, and compromised internal organs. Just over two years ago a world renowned transplant surgeon had to do a bowl, liver, and kidney transplant on a patient because of systemic damage from repeated (but infrequent) use of corticosteroids in the treatment of an immune deficiency disorder. I know of another case where a man developed osteoporosis and connective tissue injuries from Prednisone use specifically. If you really are going to do this, be sure to keep an eye on your blood calcium levels. Prednisone chews up calcium like a kid in a candy store.

It does wonders, just ask Christopher Froome.

He won the Tour de Romandie using Prednisolone with a very suspicious therapeutic use exemption.

The downside is, like mentioned here, repeated or prolonged use basically destroys your body.

Prednisolone should be used with care, but my experiences are, that you can use it safely, if you are not taking it more than 5-10 times a year.
