I've nothing against those advices but most PT just repeat what they've been taught w/o understanding why it is good and w/o any adaptation to the trainee's goal, experience, motivation.....

and it looks like "training your core" will make you be stronger, loose fat, shape up, improve your overall health etc

You forgot how it promotes world peace.
 
I had a really bad back and tried doing fitball and abs classes. Some cute chicks there and the fitball is pretty good for getting an active stretch after a back workout but if you really want to strengthen your core then squat, row and deadlift. The core is all about stabilizer muscles. Just make sure you get your form right so you can leave your belt in your bag.
