Anyone ever used them resore programs that come with a new PC, I mean the ones that take up about 8 CD's and several hours of your life to create? I'm haveing some weird problms, and every tech support 'specialist' in the entire world is in India, and I can't fucking understand them.

Should I try it? i've never done it before. Will I get back all of the software that originnally came with my computer?

I would love for Digger to chime in on this one, but he will probably red me for asking such a dumb question.

Blut Wump, RedGuru, Pintoca...???? Anyone?

If you have all the cd's and what not it is easy to do. I have done it several times.

Did you get back all of the software that was on the computer when you bought it? And did it work correctly?

As long as you have the cd's and licsence keys you will get it back. It worked good as new for me. :)

Those restore CD's are for the express purpose of restoring your computer to the way it was when you bought it. You'll lose anything new you installed, including drivers, so back up important emails and other documents.

Cool, I'm probably gonna try it out later, because I have this HP that is FRYED, and my brother gave me a brand new hard drive....so this may be a good guinnea pig.

I'm off to Home Depot for now..I don't even care if they aren't open yet...I'll just lurk around in the parking lot.

Thanks and talk to you later.

Its's a totally new hard drive..I'm just replacing one that I fried a few months ago with the restore disks I made with the box I'm on now.

I should stop and pick up some DVD's for back up though...never a bad idea.

ask hammy, i think he tried backing up his new computer he bought a month or so ago and had problems. pissed him off but im not sure if he ended up finishing or not. good luck.

If you HD is fried and wont boot then if you ever downloaded that Knoppix CD Digger pointed at a long while ago you might be able to boot from that to access your hard drive and copy any important files away to some storage space on the net or to another machine if you can work out how to connect to it. Don't forget your browser bookmarks.

As others have mentioned, those discs are supposed to restore the machine to an 'as new' state.

Alternatively, just put the old HD to one side and, after restoring your system, plug it in later as a second HD and then you should be able to access it to grab your files if they're still there.

I just bought a bunch of DVDs...and can you belive it? The only color they had was PINK. how :rainbow: oh well...I'll give it a go. I still have my Dell laptop as a backup (not to be mistaken with my shitty Toshiba company laptop).

I was thinking the exact same thing bro...theres another plug in that ribbon cable for a second hard drive...we'll see how it goes.

You might, possibly, need to fiddle with the jumpers on the two hard-drives if you put them on the same cable. It's not a biggie if you have to, just master and slave settings, but, if it doesn't work and you have a second cable, you can try the old drive on the second IDE channel.

Thanks bud, green dots to you when I recharge.

I did notice those jumpers and wondered what the hell they were for!!!

With any luck they're both set to 'CS' which means 'Cable Select'. If so, you'll probably be able to plug them onto the same cable with no hassle. Either way, it's minimal hassle: you just keep trying combinations until the machine boots up with the right drive in control. :)

The three setting are
M - Master, boot drive
S - Slave, data or second drive
CS - Cable Select, lets the system sort it out based on which drive is closer to the machine

Dude, you rock man!!! Thanks!

I'm gonna probably tackle that project tomorrow, or earlier next week, today I'm busy driving nails into my legs with pneumatic nail guns.

I will definately let you know how it goes though. :)

I guess it's less painful with a nail gun than with a hammer but also less character-building.

Good luck with it.

Thanks man...I'm gonna finish feeling sorry for myself here in a minute, drink some more coffee, and have another go at it.

I'll probabaly get my finger next time, we'll see.
