computer question

Can anyone tell me why my computer has started turning the .jpg files into .jpg.vbs (a script icon)?

I can't open any of these files unless i can sort this out.

You may have a virus that, based on your information, appears to turn all of the non-essential jpg files on your hard drive into VBS script files that are intended to do some damage.

Though, I can't figure out why the virus would turn the images on your hard drive into script files to do damage when the virus would have to be executed in order to do that, in which case it could have done whatever damage it wanted to do at that point. Then again, one of the prerequisites for virus authoring is a lack of intelligence and maturity.

Recommendations: Scan for Viruses.

Oh shit...I was hoping it wouln't be a virus. I havn't updated the anti-virus software for ages since i don't have much space left on this hard disk.

Anyone got any more information on this problem?...e.g. What the virus might do?

hard anyone update their anti virus software and if you don't update it you might as well not even have it. there are some decent ones on http://download.com that aren't too big in size. Viruses can do anything from making things run slower to wiping your hard drive clean. Basically they are designed to wreak havoc on a computer.

Sounds similar to one that was all over the place a while back, can't remember the name though. As I recall, it changes all image files into copies of the virus, so when you try to open a pic, it runs the virus again. I think it also e-mails itself out to everyone in your address book as well.

Ok, it looks as though i've got the annakournikova.jpg.vbs virus on my pc.

Apparently it e-mails the virus to everyone in my Address Book, what i dont understand is if it only does this on January 26th, or if it does it straight away. Please help, I need to warn people not to open it.

Heres the info I found on it:

What is the Anna Kournikova Virus?
This is a Visual Basic Script virus similar to the ILOVEYOU Virus that circled the globe in 2000. It mass mails the virus as an attachment called ANNAKOURNIKOVA.JPG.VBS via Microsoft Outlook. If the current system date is January 26th, this virus tries to connect to a computer shop web site in the Netherlands. The virus can also be found on a UseNet newsgroup, microsoft.publick.opk.windows9x. The script attempts to mail itself to all recipients found in the Windows Address Book.

This virus was first discovered in August 2000, but has made a comeback in the last few days (February 2001). The virus is sent using the following email:

Subject: Here you have, :0)
Body:
Hi:
Check This!

Attachment: AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs


Changes the Virus Makes to the Windows Registry

The virus creates the following changes to the Windows Registry that should be deleted

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\OnTheFly
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\OnTheFly\mailed=(1 for yes)

The virus will also leave the file AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs in the c:\windows directory

How to Clean the Virus

Other than deleting the file and registry entries shown above, this virus should be deleted by running an up-to-date virus checking program, such as the ones shown at the bottom of this page. Alternatively, you can click on the link below for a free on-line virus scanner.
