I am about to sell my old computer to a friend of mine(and a work colleage). Thing is I want to completey erase everything of the hard drive.

I am thinking re-format then use the windows rescue disk to re-install Window(obviously with the Windows CD).

Would this work?

You don't need a rescue disk.....just reinstall windows and it will ask you if you want to reformat the drive.....just click on yes.

Yes that will work.

If it is a brand name PC (HP, Dell, Compaq) you may have a system restore disk that came with the PC. It sounds like that is what you have.

Boot to dos, format the drive, and either use the restore disk or just reinstall windows.

Yep, I bought a brand new notebook. PIII 1GHZ, TFT, 128mb, 15GIG H/D, 56speed CD/DVD, loads of nice extras. Came with Windows Millenium but I am hoping to 'borrow' Windos XP tommorow.

Cost me £900.

you dont need a a rescue disk to reformat. Reboot on dos and type format c:

You might want to wipe the freespace after you format and install windows. A lot of data can still be recovered after you format. PGPfreeware has a wiping feature and you can D/L it for free.
