Computer people, i need help

i have to transfer around 500 megs of files from one pc to another. the thing that sucks is, only one of my computers has a CD-R, and guess which one it is. that's right, the one that i need to transfer the files to.

so, since i cant burn it, and since i dont have the patience to cut these files into several hundred archive files to fit on a disk. what should i do? it will take me all fucking day long to do this if i use fucking floppy disks.

i also dont want to pay for $50+ for lap link, since i will only use this fucking thing once in my life.

any suggestions?

A lap link cable does not cost $50. You can find a generic one for $10.

If you have access to a large server you could always upload the 500megs from one computer and then download on the other.

Or you could setup a small network. You probably have a networking card on one machine so all you would have to do is buy a $10 networking card and a 3 foot rj45 cable.

Do you know how to swap the hard drive?

If so, (I do this everytime) then take the HD that has your old stuff out, install it as the SLAVE HD in the new machine, then just drag and drop the files where you want them. When it finishes, re-install the HD back into the original....

If both PC's are running Win XP, you can also connect a serial cable, and use the transfer files wizard in Xp to do it, but it will take all day.

Otherwise, you can buy a CD Writer, burn the disk, and then return it, saying your Bios won't support a CDR....Best Buy will take anything back...

depending on your internet speed, upload the files onto the net in chunks depending on the webspace and then download them from the other computer

only other alternative to the ones listed i can think of....other than looking for someone who has a external CDRW or zip drive and takling theirs

Can't you just swap out the CD-R, the burn the files and then swap it back? Unless one is a laptop then that's not an option. It's pretty easy as long as opening the case doesn't intimidate you.

i have a bad history when it comes to messing with hardware.

If you dont want to mess with your hardware, then:

Go to radio shack and buy what is called a "null modem cable", or "Serial cable with crossover". Should be about $5. Plug it into serial port on one machine and then on another. Zip all the files you want to transfer into one giant zip file, and transfer it using Hyperterminal. It will be slow but reliable and cheap.

Of course what you should really do is get over your hardwarophobia and just put the hard drive of one into the other.

hooking up the HD as a slave to the other one would prob be the quickest and easiest way to do it....if you know what you are doing.
