Computer Peeps... WTF is going on with this HD?

Big Rick Rock

Guys,

So I have an old Vaio from 06. 250G WesternDigital HD. Beenrunning it non-stop for months since 06.

Well, it took a crap and the PC stopped recognizing the HD. First it gave me an error basically saying it could not find a file in the WINDOWS/system/ folder or something. It would not start up at all, not even on safe mode. It was like the HD didn't exist almost.

In desperation to retrieve my data I bought an HD enclosure and took the HD from the Vaio and put it in there... Now the HD is working fine in the enclosure as an external HD and I can find my data no problem...

So whats up? Is my PC fugged up or is it the HD thats fugged...

As a side note. Some times my PC would give me an error message saying the CPU temp was out of range. That have anything to do with it?

Sonys have terrible warranties and usually a lot of non standard parts. You HDD might be too fragmented, back up all the data and reload the OS and go from there. also when you boot the laptop it should have some diagnostic tools built in.

You can also download a cd called hirens boot cd, boot to it and that has quite a bit of diagnostic software to help pinpoint the issue.

Hey bro, I had the same problem happen to me. I talked to the GeekSquad at best buy and they wanted 600 bucks to get my data back. I told them to go fuck themselves, spent a few hours lookin around on the net and finally found a copy of some data recovery software that actually worked. After I transferred my recovered files to my laptop, I reformatted the HD, and put the files back on it afterwards, and it works good as new. PM me an email address and I can get the program to you if u wanna give it a shot.

EDIT: Just read your post more closely....You're still welcome to shoot me a pm with an email, but it sounds more complicated and you dont really need to recover files.

Could be your HDD or mobo. CPU temp could screw things up but it would most likely just shut the computer down if it was fried.

Take your computer down to the repair shop and have them run a diagnostic on it. It doesn't cost much.

If you're missing a crucial Windows file of course it won't start up. It probably got corrupted. Do a restore or something. Otherwise it could be the IDE controller on the motherboard.

the exact same thing happened on our desktop.

turns out a windows system file got corrupted, and it totally fucked things up. however, it was probably a hardware issue, rather than a software one, that caused it.

why do i say this?

well, even after we formatted and reinstalled windows, it only worked for ~1 week before it crapped out again. even after i tried using it for a slave drive, it would not hold data for more than 2 days before shitting the bed.

backup your data, contact the drive manufacturer and/or sony, and hopefully get a new one.

hd's are cheap...your data is not.

At this point I'm going to just buy a new HD and reload XP to it and go from there.

I'm going to have a hell of a time finding and reloading all of the drivers on to this biotch. It comes with XP media center edition, that going to be another challenge finding somebody to burn me a copy of that version of the OS...

I'm using this PC to Backup my DVDs and Store some of the TV programs I record for my kid. The porn is ample too (Thank you Perkele!), I keep that hidden and password protected so my little one cant stumble on to it. I loved using this thing!

This is the culprit:
PC Sony Vaio PCV-A41L 3.00GHZ 1.0GB RAM 250GB
Overstock Auctions SONY VAIO PCV-A41L 3.00GHZ 1.0GB RAM 250GB HDD DESKTOP Item 42752415

I'm going to trow 2 x 250 in there, what do you guys suggest I get for the money?

Also, I have thought about getting a small 37G 10,000rpm HD to run the OS and Applications on, then having a big 500 or 2 x 2500 for data storage... Would that increase performance any?

If it was mine (I have a 6 year old VAIO fully operational on using its 3rd HDD) I'd leave your original HDD in it's external enclosure. Then buy a new HDD (Frys' has 500 GB's for $90 on sale often) and install it in the VAIO. If you don't have a Media Edition Recovery disk, and Sony won't supply one, PM me - I can help with something similar. Drivers for the VAIO you should be able to find on the SONY website. Then copy the data from the external (original) HDD to the new HDD in the VAIO.
I wouldn't buy a 37 GB Rapture unless it was nearly free. WD just releases a VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS Hard Drive for less than $300 - price WILL come down. Wouldn't put either in any thing other than a high end home build.

As far as buying what you got. Not to be insulting, but you'll be doing good if you can find someone that'll take it for free, AND pay for shipping. Maybe in the local classified ask $100, and settle for $50? That's why I always keep my old computers - they have a greater sentimental/back up value, then a resale value...

Bro,

I don't get rid of any of my PCs. I love all of them. I have put time and energy into getting eachone tuned to do the task I need them to do. Once they have outlived their usefulness, I just reload the OS and send them to a needy student in a 3rd-world country.

I'm going to look thru the internet sites for a good set of HDs so I can start rebuilding my media center.

Good man BRR. I donate used PCs/ Laptops from myself and our company to a local group that refurbs them and gives them to needy students.

lol yup never go to Geeksquad, all they do is look at your rig and see what they can get away with selling you.

BRR it sounds like a problem I had to fix with my GF's PC (Vaio Media Center Ed.)
Does this error look familiar?
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll"

Those are a bitch to restore apparently; console recovery didn't even work for me. Had to rescue whatever files she needed off the HDD and get a new one, then reinstall Windows. Old one had over 10% bad sectors and wasn't worth saving. I think a trojan from Limewire was the culprit of the missing Windows file myself. As for the HDD, Maxtor ain't exactly top end, and poor heat displacement could've also helped chip away at it.

I get all my PC needs here-
Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!

Excellent customer service, products, prices, shipping.

Wow I had my hands on Vista Ultimate when I bought that Office Pro, should have tossed that in the box for you also. I might be able to get you a copy of XP Media edition I will have to check and might be a week.

Your boot sector is fucked up. Hw or Sw reasons, no idea.

Use windows repair on bootup installation cd to fix it.
