i am getting a new pop up...."windows virtual memory min to low. your system is low on virtual memory. windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file".

wht does this mean, what caused it, anything to worry about? :worried:

i get that also sometimes on my comp downstairs

so there's no bug or virus or trojan horse making it do this?

"Something" is using up your available memory and pagefile. Is it a virus? Only your hairstylist knows for sure.

Do you have lots of heavy duty applications running? Also you might consider checking your harddisk if it needs to be defragged. Those two things you can do to improve performance. If there are still issues then run a virus scanner or make sure yours is updated.

You may be running low on hard drive space. Windows allocates so much drive space for virtual memory. Time to delete the pron.

If you are on Windows (gonna guess XP if your computer is recent) --

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

Then click on Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

Under "storage" in the left side file structure, click on Disk Defragmenter. Run the Analyzer first - this will tell u if you should defrag or not. If yes, then run the defrag - let it run over nite because its a slow process. It just tries to more efficiently align blocks of files to more be more contiguous instead of spread out all over your harddrive. Its good to do it every 6 months or so just for maintenance purposes.

You had me until you said defrag. It ONLY matters if the files it's trying to use are horribly fragmented or you have so little disk space available you can't defrag until you delete some files anyway. I worked in 2 tech support call centers and if I had a dollar for every call that started with 'The last tech had me defrag my hard drive and my shit's still broke' I could retire.

This may be more accurate. That message can come up when you have too little disk space to handle what was allocated for swap as well. How much physical ram do you have? Do you have a Suite like Norton SystemWorks installed?(If so, uninstall that shit first and reinstall Virus Prot ONLY)
What Windows OS you using?

If you are on Windows XP with more than 256 MB RAM, either close open apps or make sure your shit is virus free. If you do not have Virus protection, try Housecall

Good luck bro.

Just trying to cover some of the things that can impact performance w/o going into gross detail on them.

I had a former roommate defrag my computer to death.

He said 'All I did was defrag it' to which I asked how many times.....he sheepishly responded 'I don't know'. If you defrag so much in 1 weekend you can't remember how many times you've done it, you've done it too much. :)

Thankfully it only broke a windows file and didn't kill the drive. I actually still have that old 13G drive I bought in 1996. In the 8 years since he last defragged it that weekend, it hasn't been defragged once. :)
