when i watch video clips from you tube, do the videos get downloaded to my hard drive or are they just playing from the site?

Should be just watching them. When it says 'downloading', it means it's loading the video so you can watch it from the site. Some videos take forever to view/download from a site.

A good way to tell is whether you can immediately replay the file after having watched it. If it has to rebuffer etc then it's only streamed. If it just replays then it's in your system somewhere. Getting at it can be trickier than just looking in the temp directory.

Most larger internet stuff (i.e. streaming videos) get cached to temporary files. If you want to flush them out, from Internet Explorer do a:

Tools -> Internet Options ... and click the "Delete Files..." button thats in the middle of the dialog box.
