Computer gurus - Kernel32.dll error

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop, with Windows Me (my bro says ME sucks and is why I’m having problems) anyway I get this error and TONS of others almost every day and usually have to reboot my system…it’s the worst when I’m on the web using IE or Netscape…I’m not sure how to fix this other than re-installing windows? My brother wants to install XP on it instead but I think he said I have to call Sony to see if it will work with my computer…not sure exactly what he told me.

Any help?

Thanks.

Ps I have tons of spy ware crap and downloaded a spy ware cleaner but I cant delete all the files because..get this…the kernel32.dll is fucked up and needed to run the deletion process or something like that

kernal32.dll errors are never fun, if its caused by programs running it means that they are crashing. It could also be caused by being infected with a virus *though rare* I hate trying to troubleshoot to find the exact cause of the problem, it just is way too time consuming and like your brother said you are probably going to be better off just reinstalling windows, i would suggest upgrading to XP if possible, i have it on my sony vaio with no problems.

get XP its waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than any other operating system out there rite now...mark my words....dankdukes...

Thanks guys…so if he installs XP..all my files and programs, basically my whole hard drive will be the same and I wont lose anything?

yes, with the XP home edition upgrade what happens is XP replaces the windows folder with its own, reinstalls all the hardware and makes sure everything is kosher and leaves the files and organization of the files in tact.

have no fear your porn is safe.

Umm, yeah right.

Does the wool over your eyes cause any chaffing?

Move all your data off to another drive/computer/something, then format. Always install an OS from a clean drive. Your asking for troubles if you don't.

Phewweeee thank God…wouldn’t want the one of a kind nudes of some of the well known Elite fitness chics to be lost………

Ill see if my brother can do this 2nite.

if you do a clean install, I think you'll lose your files and documents, correct me if I'm wrong.

Go for the upgrade option.

So installing XP will get rid of the kernell error and all the other annoying ones that give me the “blue screen of death” ?

Agreed. I used to get kernell32 errors all the time. The upgrade took care of it.

dont ever just do an upgrade for XP. the drivers are different on XP than any other operating system. do a fresh install, otherwise you'll have problems down the road when you go to install things and the drivers are different. trust me, i know plenty of people that have went though this.

Thanks guys I’m waiting for my brother to email me back with his opinion and I also sent him your replys.

I had Win ME for about 1 year and a half. I had around 3 or 4 crashes everday. I reinstalled it twice. I blamed it on everything, my hard drive, motherboard, SDRAM, etc. I've had XP since Friday and have had no problems. I know it's Windows and will still crash, but as long as I don't get the constant freezes and errors as ME had, I'll be satisfied.

Did you do the upgrade or fresh complete install??

It probably is better to do a clean install, but I've always done the upgrade and never had any problems with it.

I was a big fan of XP until my 3rd reintall. I've had it installed for about 2 weeks, and now it bluescreens on shutdown.

Between that and the DivX video problems, I think I'm switching back to 98SE.

I just got really fed up and just did an upgrade. My HD is 40GB and pretty full. I'm going to get an 80GB and do a fresh install soon. I didn't have any driver installation problems, though I've heard a whole lot of people do. Windows had all my drivers on their website.

The people who had driver problems, probably bought XP when it 1st came out so of course there were going to be driver issues at 1st.

Thats probably been taken care of by now.
