Starting today, I've got these shadows on my monitor screen. A line of text that ends in the middle of the screen has a shadow that extends all the way across the screen.... different shades of grey. :(

Rebooted, ran scandisk... no better. New computer as of 1/1/00. I can't think of anything I've done that would cause this... any suggestions on getting a clear screen again?

It shows up on all web pages, even documents.

Thanks for any help. :)

Does this happen everywhere (even your desktop) or just in certain places? It could be a monitor problem. Try hooking up a different monitor or taking your computer (case only, not the monitor) to a friend's house and trying it out with his.

Have there been any large magnets near your monitor recently? They tend to cause problems with the display. You might want to use the "Degauss" function on your monitor (fool with all the cool buttons until your screen suddenly jumbles around and makes cool noises - that's degauss. I like doing it for fun sometimes. :))

If, at worst, the problem is with your monitor and the degauss remedy doesn't work, you might have to send it off for repairs or just buy a new one. (Advice: Buy a new one.)

Sounds like a monitor problem. Do what Warik said - try hooking up the computer to another monitor. If the problem goes away, your monitor is toast. If not, it's something else. Your video card could be toast, or you could have drivers which went bad. Redownload and install the latest drivers.

I thought Iwas the only one that liked doing that. The best is to wait for a couple of weeks to do it then it really looks cool.

Sorry to get off subject, but is SMALLMOVESAL a lesbian..she comments on all of the womens pics...She acts ohhhh sooo straight in this room and then always psots a comment about the half naked women that seem really nice, like she is trying to bump canadian doughnuts or something! Anyone else think she is lesbo? I really don't care if she is, just thought her nice little comments about every wmoan pic is strange.......If she is I wish she would tell us,,,,maybe then her pics might turn me on..LOL

It's the best when I do it at school. Those monitors haven't been degaussed since they day they were set up. Looks like I'm creating some kind of temporal rift in the monitor or something.

Thanks for the responses!

Warik, could you run by the part on operating the 'degauss' function again? what buttons are those?

How would I safely redownload drivers? (I'm not the computer whiz... can ya' tell?!)

appreciate your help guys:)

PS. It's a Gateway

just start pressing buttons on the monitor. i have a gateway monitor hold on i'll look to see what you press. hopefully this is how your monitor looks-

FPM down arrow Right Arrow - +

Press the down arrow 4 times, then press the plus button and it should degauss.

flick...
pressed down arrow 4 times, then + sign...nothing happens

other suggestions?

there's a knob on monitor that adjusts contrast, etc... anything there to try?

No magnets near computer lately...shows up on desktop too

hmmm i don't know how your monitor is set up. just fuck around with it, get to the screen where you can set up the contrast, brightness, etc. and then somewhere in there should be the Degauss

found it!

cool- the whole screen wiggles... but stripes & shadows are still there

even ran Gateway goBack... no help

more help appreciated from anyone...:)

If the degauss doesnt work and another monitor doesnt, replace the video card- also remember the basics and make sure there are no bent pins in your connectors...

i was having a similar problem before with my problem. This is what you can do to troubleshoot the problem.

1) unplug the monitor from the computer. leave the power plugged in going to the monitor and turn on the monitor. if you monitor turns on and you can see the test colors on your screen then its not your monitor.

2) second, if your monitor's ok then your gonna have to open up your computer case and make sure your video card is seated properly. sometimes when they ship the computer, the cards lose their secure seating. if your familar with doing that then try it, if not call a pc nerd to do it for you. Its an easy task.

thanks for the suggestions...
got w/ GW live chat troubleshooter... it is the video card... sending me a new one

appreciate your help :)

Depends, some monitors are sold

with a 3 year warranty. If that is the case then you can get another one for free.
