what would u prefer, i dont want to learn pure ground based or pure boxing.... looking for something with both, preferably a good bit of throws also. thanks

If you want to go with the most "battle tested" I would suggest you take Both BJJ and Muay Thai Classes...

Vale Tudo. if you can find it taught as that,

It's really just Thai & BJJ -but taught in combo and not so strict on keeping a Muay Thai stance or focusing on a gi.
JKD is cool too - but you'll have to wade through the Kung fu nerds, politics, and wannabe Bruce Lee's.

If you are looking to invest time into one thing, and don't plan to compete. I would suggest you look into Krav Maga... That is some real deal street fighting-no rules type shit. You train to use every day objects as weapons, and to hit an opponent’s weak points to end fights quickly. Not very fancy, and not very effective in a drawn out fight against a good fighter. But it is all you'll ever need to end the typical 20second 3-4 strike bar fight or street altercation over a parking space.

TKD uses alot of sweeps and foot fighting. but i think that TKD is a very good base for learning other styles of MA.

the krav maga is great, i've heard

BJJ has too much time spend fighting on your back. if all BJJ practioners contracted a rare back rash, it would be over for them.

judo, find a good dojo that will teach you all the fundamentals and classic techniques, and it's all good. i highly recommend it.

Krav maga apparently build from ur natural instincts rather than obliterate them and force you down one path like most traditional arts...i think thats pretty cool from a self defence aspect

JKD is probably one of the first MMA's if u think about it

BJJ and thai is a good effective combo, im slowly moving towards that

im considering krav maga, jkd and my friends kung fu gym. how much do gyms usually cost monthly. i think his gym teaches a type of kung fu and also a type of JJ. I like the sound oa krav maga but im afriad im not going to be able to find a gym in my area, same with jkd. there is only one muay thai gym in my area that advertised muay thai in the name. most of them are merely karate gyms like c.s kim. there is a aikido gym fairly close to me, but i want more then defense and tahts what i hear it just is... i guess im going to go try a few out but i need more info on all the syles, will give K for help!

You could try San Shou Kickboxing. It incorporates a variety of strikes similar to muay thai, but also has lifts, throws, sweeps, and takedowns.
