I plan on cashing in on my G.I. bill. and maybe get a 2-year degree in something. lol Id like to broaden my horizen a bit after spending about 4 years as a infantryman and doing general labor before entering the military. Any of you college grads out there have any suggestions for someone in my boat?

thanks

Two year degrees are great because they are lower cost and less time. They can also be more pragmatic too. I personally like the way they tend to focus on specific skills (i.e. Microsoft Web Server Administration) as opposed to more abstract topics (i.e. "Computer Science).

If you are going to do a 2-year one, I'd recommend being as job-specific as you can.

No "Business administration"... choose "Accounting" instead
No "Computer Science"... choose "SQL Server Administration" instead
No "Art" ... choose "Graphic Design and Web Page Layout" instead

Hit the ground running!

I was actually looking into accounting courses before I posted this.

I think this is very good advice. I don't know much about associate's/ 2-year degrees myself.

Back in the mid-90's we hired an activity-based accounting guy who was incredible. He basically picked-apart every business process and helped us understand where our costs really were. He was a complete and total godsend -- and wound-up making big $$$.

The key with accounting is being anal. Everything has to balance. No detail can be overlooked. Guys who can "go subterranian" (old GE term, meaning you can dig into detail) on an accounting discrepancy are worth a lot.

Accountants are making comparable incomes to lots of attorneys these days. If you could do it in two years and you are well suited for that sort of thing (I'm not), it sounds like a good choice. I don't know how marketable a 2 year degree is out there, though. If I were you I would ask an accountant that you know for the skinny on whether you need a 4 year degree to make the better money.

I agree, I took several courses in forensic accounting and I have saved my company alot of money by auditing vendors and state and federal tax stamps...

Medical is quick and easy. They have several 2-year degree programs. Actually, if u can find it, you should go for your RN. I don't know about where you live, but around here, if you take a sememster of prereq. classes-- you can jump into a program and get your BSN in about 18 months. Kinda crazy. I don't know if all states have those programs. OR you can go to school for a lot longer and be a paramedic+ make less money. I would not advise.

Oh yeah -- forensic accountants are pure gold. With all the scandals and marginal accounting practices these days, that industry will only grow. That's probably the best area of accounting right now I'd think.

I'm a business major, if I could do it over I'd choose accounting.

Get your BS, goto grad school, then get your CPA and your making big bucks for the rest of your life, easy.

Everyone gets a business degree and an MBA, myself included.

I would get a BA in English a liberal arts degree, than an MBA

It is very refreshing to meet someone who can speak, write and communicate well.
