maybe i should make my own moonshine. is it legal in the U.S.
there are restrictions at the Federal and State levels for how much alcohol one person can legally brew for personal consumption in 1 year. however, it is perfectly legal to brew your own alcohol, whether it be beer, wine, champange, or liquer.
the catch is you can't sell it. period. not even to break even. you need licenses for that.
and no one is gonna know how much alcohol you brew for yourself in one year unless you A) tell them or B) own a brewery that's churning out massive quantities of alcohol.
and personal consumption doesn't mean only you drinking it. you can share your alcohol with others, just can't accept money for the alcohol.
now that the subject of making your own alcohol has come up, i am once again reminded that i've got over $200 of beer brewing equipment that i only used once to make just short of 2 cases of an Irish Stout. when i go on winter break this year, i think i need to get busy and brew up 3 batches (6 cases) to hold me over for the full year. i rarely drink anymore, but when i do, i like to have a high quality beer. why spend $40 for a case of Guinness when i can brew 2 cases for $25?
now i bet Jerkbox pipes up and tells me what to brew then offers to help drink it all
