Coffee and oestrogen

SteelWeaver

New member
I read somewhere that women who drink 2 or fewer cups of coffee per day have quite a lot lower oestrogen levels than women who drink 5 or more cups a day.

Anyone know anything about this?

".................. coffee use greater than 1 cup per day was associated with higher E2 levels. In a multivariate model, total caffeine use was
significantly associated with E2 levels after adjustment for age, BMI, total calories, current smoking, alcohol, cholesterol consumption,
and day of sampling. Early follicular phase E2 increased from 28.2 pg/mL for women consuming less than or equal to 100 mg of caffeine to 45.2
pg/mL for women consuming greater than or equal to 500 mg of caffeine per day, about a 70% increase. CONCLUSION(S): Coffee consumption and
total caffeine use may increase early follicular phase E2 levels independent of related habits of alcohol or tobacco use."

(from Lucero et al. 2001)

Is it an increase in production, or an effect of caffeine on hepatic clearance?

Other facts,

Caffeine + estrogen is OK.

Ethanol + estrogen = disaster.

and....is the increase of physiological significance (reproductive or body composition)?

Caffeine is not know to induce or inhibit CYP1A1 or CYP3A4, though estrogen DOES inhibit CYP1A1 to the extent that some women on HRT may become very slow metabolizers of caffeine. I don't know if caffeine can inhibit CYP17 or induce CYP19, though I think it would have been well documented by now if that were the case.

More likely the caffeine raises estrogen via systemic stimulation of cortisol/prolactin signalling pathways. I think caffeine also increases SHBG, so it's prolly not a good idea to drink a lot of caffeine on a regular basis. A cup or two per day seems OK though.

Thanks MS. Yup - that was the study, I believe.

Sigh ... :(

Wonder why everything yummy is bad for you?

W6, what's ethanol in?

I think he meant "Ethanol + Women = disaster". He often gets estrogen and women confused.

Caffeine is a most confusing drug indeed. As you age (approach menopause) there is evidence that ysome aspect of caffeine and/or estrogen metabolism changes to the point where caffeine may cause a decrease in estrogen. The studies are not causal though, so it's hard to interpret. It may just be that women with higher estrogen levels at menopause are more sensitive to caffeine due to decreasing overall activity of cytochrome enzymes. In other words, maybe the association is not "menopausal women who drink less coffe have higher estrogen" but rather "women who have higher estrogen drink less coffee". This second possibility might also explain some of the supposed link between coffee consumption and postmenopausal bone density/osteoporosis. No one knows for sure. What IS for sure is that coffee measureably affects younger womens hormones to the extent that that it reduces fertility and insulin sensitivity, and increases symptoms of PMS.

The caffeine in EC stack definitely counts. But hey, let's get real here. How many women do you know that go through a competition diet and DON'T consume considerable amounts of caffeine in one form or another. When used appropriately, caffeine is a nice adjunct to a competition diet. I advice you avoid consuming it with or near carbohydrate rich meals though. Perhaps the best bet is to only use caffeine during "diets", and otherwise stick to herbal tea and water???

lol.

Alright then, looks like my Brita and I are about to become even better bosom buddies than ever before ....

Aaaah! Nothing like a crystal clear drink of FREEZING cold pure water to WAKE you up on a COLD winter morning in a house with so little insulation you can see your breath as you breathe.

Ah, joy :)

Gosh! Isn't that balmy for there at this time?? Got your bikini out?

I hate sleeping with the heater on, (gas heater) and my house is made of wood with the window frames all out of alignment with the windows (few too many earthquakes), so it's kinda like camping .... Especially when the darn pipes freeze :(

I guess I could gag down some herbal tea. At least it would be hot, lol.

Exactly, MS. I would refuse to competition diet without my ECA. Good point though - keeping the caffeine consumption low unless "dieting". I try to not take ECA when I'm not dieting - those early morning lifts need an occasional bump though. :-)

Herbal tea's not so bad - Celestial Seasonings put out a winter blend called Gingerbread Spice. Smells yummy and tastes pretty good - especially if you add a packet of Splenda.

It's 30 degress here this morning. Sigh...
