CODE look what game is coming out next year

Code- speaking of that cthlu-whatever dude....

did you see hellboy? there were some weird squid things in there that looked similar... I assumed you would know wht that was all about...

(the movie was very average imo)

LOL, yeah. There have actually been several Lovecraft inspired games, and they sucked worse than Lovecraft inspired movies.

But this one looks AWESOME!

And yeah, I noticed the cthuloid-like dude in Hellboy. There are some interesting plot-points in Hellboy that borrow from Lovecraft.

One of the big problems with doing Lovecraft in any other media (aside from written word) is that you lose so much in the translation. His works were very image laden and relied heavily on the power of symbology. That unless you're some sort of symbol nurd, you just can't grasp the scope of it all.

Please explain or detail one or two (when time permits)
the movie was only average tho - I was disappointed..

Symbology:
Lovecraft worked a great deal of symbology into his works, primarily pagan symbols. The thrust of his works run parallel to a lot of very early pagan religions, prior to even Norse religions. And so the very frequent mention of the Great Olde Ones and the False Gods (like cthulhu himself) are a direct allegory to the pagan pantheon being usurped by modern christianity. (Although no where in his works does he suggest the Great Olde Ones are any nicer than the False Gods)

In fact, many of the symbols used to represent the Great Olde Ones are actual symbols from ancient gods of polynesian and malaysian cultures.

Hellboy:
The seven gods of chaos will "be summoned when the stars are right" is a direct quote from Hellboy *AND* at least 3 of Lovecrafts works. The gods of chaos resemble creatures from the cthulhu mythos, last one being eerily similar to cthulhu mythos.

So aside from some stolen themes and creatures, it pretty much does it's own thing. Meaning it didn't suck, but it also didn't overtly try to present itself as "inspired by HP Lovecraft" either.

ahah... gotcha bro - thx for the 411... I wonder if the guy who wrote the comic is a fan of lovecraft, or used some of hsi stuff as a source for the stories...

The correlation is undeniable, and I'll bet they credit the current owner's of his works somehow in the end credits. I didn't watch for the mention of Chaosim Inc in the credits, but I'd wager a nice penny it's there.
