Got a question.....
How do cigarettes affect training, especially while on aas?
I have been a smoker for a few years and smoke about 3 packs a week. I wanted to know if smoking affects my ability to make gains and if it affects the effectiveness of aas in the body. Thanx!
 
Smoking heavily impairs airway resistance and primarly inhibts physical performance by reducing the ammount of oxygen in the body which surpress nutrient delivery/uptake and energy production.

High levels of carbon monoxide from smoking reduce the amount of oxygen absorbed into the blood from the lungs. Carbon monoxide in the blood also reduces the amount of oxygen that is released from the blood into the muscles. Smoke inhalation has an immediate effect on respiration, increasing airways resistance and therefore reducing the amount of oxygen absorbed into the blood. It causes chronic swelling of mucous membranes, which also leads to increased airways resistance and increases the heart rate for a given level of exercise. Oxygen is important for the functioning of all energy systems in the body. Any mechanism that interferes with oxygen transport and uptake interferes with energy production as well as nutrient delivery/uptake and therefore sports performance.

I could go on for hours but I think everyone should have a general idea by now.

I understand that smoking isn't good for you and I appreciate that explanation Jenetic.
For everyone that wants to flame me for my question and for smoking, I have to say that the reason for my "stupid" question is because sometimes it's a little hard to quit smoking and very easy to just say it. I just wanted to know how badly does smoking cigarettes affect the aas in my system......does it reduce it's effectiveness, in addition to not getting the necessary nutrients intake/delivery because of the lack of oxygen. I know they are bad and I am coming up with a plan to quit smoking, like NOW, just have to see how it goes and how hard it will be.
 
I was in no way attempting to flame you. I used to smoke for years and not only can I give you an educated response on the issue, but I can personally say that it inhibits your gains and performance negatively on and off AAS. Quiting smoking is one of the most difficult things to do (no one knows unless they have been there) but there are medical alternatives that do make it much easier. The nicotine patches work great. They help you overcome the physical addiction to nicotine. The psychological part is up to you. As long as there is a will, there is a way.

Thanks for the info bud. I wasn't reffering to you anyway about getting flamed. It's the responses like from mr. saddam up there that are sarcastic. I will try the patch and/or any other medication to help me out and I'm sure I'll succeed. If the patch takes care of my physical addiction, then the psychological aspect is easy for me because I have the training to think about in place of cigarettes. It's just the physical part that's rough. Thanks for the info Jenetic. Karma to you!
 
Cigarettes have no place in bodybuilding. HOWEVER, don't quote me on this, but I believe nicotine actually raises natural testosterone. Believe it or not, I actually used to know a couple of bodybuilders, non smokers, who used nicotine patches as they believed they raise natural test production!! Any insight into this Jenetic? I could be way off! I'm fully aware of nicotine related side effects and I think it was a stupid idea!

I quit smoking 19 months ago aftger smoking for 20 years. I fell tons better. I did shots. Yes shots. They have these shots now that are GURANTEED to make yopu quit smoking. they work INSTANTLY !! They cost $500.00 for the shots. But it was well worth it. I did my at a nicotine addiction center here in Atlanta. But Iunderstand some family doctors are doing them now. usually around the same price. If you are serious about quiting this is the way to go. I have NEVER EVER wanted another smoke after those shots. If interested PM me and I will send you the link to the center in which I had it done. That way yo ucan get the info and approach your family doc about it. It is the best thing you will EVER do for yourself.

your thinking is very short term. What about longevity and quality of life instead of just "how will this affect the AAS"?
Go volunteer at a Veterans Hospital (theyre always looking for volunteers and it would be a good way to give something back to the vets) and watch those little guys pulling around the oxygen tanks and still having to stop several times to catch their breath if they have to walk up a minor slope...that's where I've seen the worst cases (of everything). Spending time at a Veterans Hospital will make you appreciate your long term health more than anything I can imagine.

The tar buildup in your lungs from cigarettes will hurt you in terms of cardiovascular circulation and your stamina overall.

You'll make gains regardless, but asking if cigarettes will hinder gains is akin to asking if being an alcoholic will hinder gains.........use your head.

What do you think?

I know exactly ehat you mean, my motto use to be, "It's easy to quit, I've done it thousands of times". I tried just about everything, wasted hundreds of dollars on patches and gums and pills all to no avail. In the end what worked for me was cold turkey. I picked out a day and said that is it (the week before I switched brands). It was hard, but an urge only lasts for about 3 minutes. Everytime I felt like I wanted a smoke, I just grabbed a bottle of water (which is good as a sub and good for you) and said I can ride this out for 3 minutes. Personally, I hate losing and I said to myself smoking isn't like breathing or eating or sleeping, it's not something I HAVE to do.

Best of luck, remember, NOTHING will make you quit unless you WANT to quit.

I thought of going cold turkey and that may be strategy #1. Maxpain also told me about these shots that he took at a clinic and he never picked up a butt again. All of these options sound good, but cold turkey may be my first step. If that doesn't work, then there are several other ways to do it as well. The important thing is that I have it in my head to quit and it won't go away until I do. I am a very persistent person, I just never told myself before that I wanted to quit.
 
There is no point in smoking and training IMO. The two are separate lifestyles which if youre into one, you shouldnt really be interested in the other one.

I used to smoke, i know its hard. You need to really want to give up or you never will. no amount of magic products can beat will power. Surely being a BBer, your willpower should be strong ? (sticking to diet, training schedule etc)
The reason that i used to give up was i was sick of the smoking and recreational drugs which had left me with the impressive physique of being 6,2 and 135 lbs and got my ass in the gym.

Gym and smokes? dont really mix so i quit cold turkey. Three years on, and ive never looked back. Good luck with it anyway bro.

(Ps And i know full well that reformed smokers are the worst for lecturing people, ill try to leave my soapbox at home next week.)
 
I am by no means endorsing smoking but it does increase metabolism and suppress appetite; 2 things that body builders sometimes strive for.

Keep this in mind when you quit. You may have to adjust your diet and training.
 
Yeah a figured that. I'm not really worried bout it though. If I can quit smoking, then I can definitely adjust any metabolic changes that I may encounter in the process. Let me rephrase that.....WHEN (not if) I QUIT SMOKING , I can definitely adjust to the metabolic changes that I may encounter!
 
i quit almost 2 years ago after smoking a pack a day for 12.5 years... cold frickin turkey.
drank tonns of water and that helped. smoked alot of weed because whenever i wanted a smoke i would go smoke a bit of weed (smoked a bit of a joint like a smoke) and that would fullfill my physical craving + make my lungs feel hurt so i wouldnt even consider having a smoke afterwards.. (not saying "go smoke weed" just saying what i did)...
another thing that helped that was recommended to me by a doctor to help with the mental side was 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine... I took them both and quit so I cant say they did'nt help.

I know alot of guys who have done steroids and smoke regularily... worked for them, maybe not as good as it could have, but never the less, they made gains... NO, smoking and sports dont go together, but i think it is safe to say that most of us started smoking long before we started body building (i started when i was 12, started training seriously when i was 17 or 18).. you just have to eventually smarten up and quit.
 
DUDE STOP THAT NASTY HABIT!! My old training partner used to smoke one right after we left the gym--god did he ever piss me off! Look you dont need a report to know that drawing smoke in your lungs is bad--THATS WHY WE COUGH!!

Smoking, however muched I loved it was the best thing I ever quit. Well, maybe Debby was... anyway: quit. You will love being a non smoker.

I don't have an addictive physiology, or to say that so it makes sence: no cravings. Just through out the pack and moved on. I do smoke if I get hammered. Which happens about 3 or 4 times a year if that, drunks are boring too, unless thats the only path to getting laid... but I digress. Know any cancer survivors? Emphasima tank suckers? Probably not, or you wouldn't be asking this question.
 
Here's an update folks.....
I have quit smoking and have not had a cigarette in 1 week! I went on the patch and luckily my cravings have been very few. Infact, the only time I feel I "need" a cigarette is after lunch and that lasts about 1 minute. I just focus on something else....like how good I feel! :-) I'm going to be on the patch for a couple of weeks and if it keeps going as good as it has, then I will get off the patch. I'm doing a lot better (mentally and physically) than I thought I would be doing. My will-power is very strong. Anyway, I very happy I finally did it!

Good for you! Now NOTHING has power over you except you. You can probably smell it on others already. Kind of gross really.
 
Thanks bro. Yeah it's actually kinda funny...a couple of days later I can really smell it on people and it smells like shit. It's amazing how a person becomes numb to the smell when they are smokers themselves. Now, I'm starting to tell even from my clothes when I'm around other smokers.

just quit the cravings aren't there but i need to reduce stress in life thats the only time i want one is when stressed out
