China bans dog from Olympic menu

Dog meat is eaten by some in several Asian countries
China has ordered dog meat to be taken off the menu at its 112 official Olympic restaurants in order to avoid offending foreign visitors.

Restaurant workers are advised to "patiently" suggest other options to diners who order dog.

Any restaurant found violating the ban would be black-listed, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Dog - known as "fragrant meat" - is eaten by some Chinese for purported medicinal properties.

The ban, issued by the Beijing Catering Trade Association, forbids all designated Olympic restaurants from offering dog and urges other food outlets to remove the meat from menus.

"If a customer orders dog meat, restaurant staff should patiently suggest another entree," said Xiong Yumei, deputy director of the Beijing Tourism Bureau told Xinhua.

Act of respect

The measure has been implemented to "respect the habits of many countries and nationalities," the Beijing News quoted the municipal food department as saying.

The BBC's James Reynolds says the ban is one of several steps taken by China to avoid foreign visitors being amused or offended by local customs.

Authorities have also told people to queue up politely, to smile and not to spit on the streets.

During the 1988 Seoul Olympics, South Korea also banned doggie dishes from menus. Officials invoked a law banning the sale of "foods deemed unsightly".

Dog meat is eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

Imagine if that happened in this country... It would start a war... What's amusing to me is how different cultures decide which animals will be spared and made pets.... Many animals that can be domesticated are treated just like dogs are in China... People are odd.... "If you dare touch my boys (my pigs) I'll hunt you down and kill you.".... People are still barbaric... No matter how cultured and educated.... still barbaric.

It's a respectable act to take dog off the menu but I don't think it's necessary for them to change what is culturally acceptable in their country.

If you don't eat dog - don't order it.

what about cat?

They used cats in my anatomy class... Quite disgusting, but I'd rather have not worked on dead humans.

I agree. I ate dog in Korea and Vietnam.

When in Rome...

How was it?
How was it cooked?

I am such a hypocriyte when it comes to eating animals, some I have no problem eating others for whatever the reason I can't bring myself to eat.

In Vietnam we didn't know until afterwards. It tasted like dry hamburger. (It was ground and served as a burger).

In Korea it is a delicacy. It was prepared with noodles and spices, kind of like bulgogi (if you have ever had that). It tasted more like steak when I had it then.

On another note, in Vietnam I went to a place that served "birds" (with the head still on them.) One girl that was with us cried when they brought out the bird (with the head still on it - they took the birds back and removed the heads.) When we left the joint we noticed cages on the roof. Our guide told us they capture the pigeons on the roof and keep them there in cages because they have no refrigeration. The girl with us didn't eat much for the rest of the trip after that incident.

Pigeon is very tasty. Almost as good as duck, but not as juicy.

even fish?

Fish I don't mind. When a fish comes across a dead rotting carcass, it may take a nibble. But the carcass isn't covered in maggots.

Carnivorous mammals are filthy. Most land predators are more scavengers than hunters. I won't eat 'em.
