I was always under the impression that they're meant to work different parts of the back.
With good form, wide grip chins hit the upper, outer lats really, really well (as long as the rear delts, to a degree, and some other back muscles).
Pull ups hit the mid-lower lats, for me. I consider them too different exercises.
