Children's Wishes - "Office Workers"

Had an interesting discussion today.

When children are asked what u want to be when u grow up, they never say "office worker" - yet that's what many of them become.

Funny. Wonder if we're setting kids sights too high just to dissapoin them as adults. Discuss - i'm goign for an ice cream.

Office workers dont get the exposure of the usual glam jobs that kids say they want to be when they grow up. Yet the office worker jobs outnumber the glam jobs by a shitton more Im sure. So its a simple matter of probability. All the kids see are the glam jobs when they are kids, so thats what they say they want to be, but those jobs are very scarce compared to all the office worker jobs. Simple matter of math IMO

Hence disappointmen in adults when they realize their dreams were not realistic.

Teachers should say "Sorry Johnny, you won't be a movie star - you'll be sitting in a cubicle working on excel spreadsheets all day getting fat. Start preparing now son".

I thought this was explained in Brave New World?
Children should be streamed according to genetic potential.
Much easier just to choose in advance who succeeds and who is bound for the factory ;)

glam jobs = low pay

cube dweller = low pay
but the chance to have more

a job is an agreement to exchange time for $$

otherwise go make your own soap..

I agree. Kids and highschool students have no idea what kind of jobs people actually work. All I was told was that my grades determine my future.
Which is a half truth at best.

Word - the fun, cool jobs have a MUCH higher demand as a result. Acting, Cop, Sports Athlete, Writer, Artist, Musician, Astronaut, Gov Agent, Politician, etc. Also have much higher barrier to entry installed. Good luck excelling in those jobs.

The "boring crappy" jobs, have much LESS demand and easier to get. Fast food, engineer, accountant, office monkey, janitor, driver, construction, etc. Most people wind up picking the boring crappy jobs cuz it's easier to get, more of them, and they have to put much less effort in to get hired. After 30 it's more about "settling for what you can" not "dreaming what you want to be". No one wants to hear about a 35 y/o dreaming of his perfect job.

..and you know there's a depression when people wakeup and start dreaming of getting those crappy jobs. The McDonald's in my area has a waiting list.

My parents told me that I wanted to be a construction worker when I was very young because I liked the big machines they played with.

Hmm...
