Actually, I can easily believe that they were doing "only" 120 mph. At that speed there is enough kinetic energy to easily split a car in half. That is because kinetic energy is proportional to the velocity squared. So a car going 120mph has 4 times as much energy as a car going 60 mph. Not twice as much. That is why speed is so dangerous. A tiny increase, can mean ALOT more damage.

I lent my mustang to a buddy to drive his GF home. Guy had no idea how to handle a beefed up sports car. He hit the tree in excess of 150Kph. The two halfs of the mustang were over 48 ft apart from each other.

I snapped these photos after we went to go look for him and came across the wreakage, he had been gone a long time. Made the front page of the local paper too........

In the first pic, you can see the perspective. Font half of my stang was curb side, and the front was just about on the stairs of the house.
