How is going so high over your maintenance cals beneficial? Is it to give your muscles fuel to burn during work outs?

It has to do a few things:
1) replenish leptin levels
2) stabilize T4-T3 conversion (thyroid function) by filling up liver glycogen
3) creating an anabolic environment through glycogen-supercompensation
4) increasing workout intensity for the first few days after the refeed, especially when on a strict diet
