Cheap Windows Vista For Everyone (Microsoft's failure = unadvertised sale)

p0ink said:
dt, how do you get anything done on linux?

sorry, but there just arent enough decent programs out for it to justify using it. i have ran slackware/debian linux and freebsd a few years ago, but it's just too much of a hassle to use it still.

so it's either aresenic or hemlock, when it comes to computing.
Ubuntu Linux or Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED 10) are both ready for prime time. I used FreeBSD for 8 years but I couldn't live with it as a desktop. Ubuntu is stable, easy to update, and fast. The most difficult thing I do is convert videos I d/l back into DVDs and that is pretty simple now.

If I absolutely have to have access to Windows I have Win 2K in a vmware guest OS.

I beleive the upgrade to Vista from XP trashes your valid XP key in case you ever wanted to go back.

that's such bullshit

if someone purchases a copy of XP....it belongs to them. they should be able to use it again at any time if they wish

its like buying a car, and if I decide I want an additional car, they are going to take the first car from me?

fucking microsoft

that's M$ for you.

and it is confirmed, it will trash your xp key...so you can never run that copy ever again.

If you think of it as customizing your vehicle rather than buying a new one and still expecting to use your old one then it seems less onerous. You could still install your old XP and run it for a month until it goes tits up for want of 'activation'.

If you were prepared to spend some time on the phone bleating at them then they might condescend to allowing you to run your old XP if you could convince them that you weren't a software pirate, which it's, by default, assumed that everyone is.

This is the kind of crap, though, that caused me to walk away from Windows about five years ago. I tried a couple of the BSD flavours and some Linux variants. I even tried Solaris briefly. Eventually, I got a Mac and never looked back.
