Name me some food thats heavy in protein and low in fat.
I am tired of eating tuna from the can. I need food thats really easy to prepare, straight out of the can would be great...cheap even better..if it tastes great, thats a bonous.

Karma for guys who help me out;)

Bag of Chicken Breasts from Costco, cook them all each weekend on the grill and freeze, leaving a few in the fridge to be tahwing at all times.
Or Ground beef

I second that. Just picked up like 17 chicken breasts for 17 bucks from there. Their tray o ground beef is also neat, but I try to stay away from red meat unless I am bulking.

You asked for cheap and real. Well, it's only 88% real, but it's the cheapest possible source aside from catching squirrels. It does require some labor. You could make it once a week.

Lentils + rice protein powder!

1 lb bag of lentils provides 98 g protein
at $0.006/g.

Nutribiotic rice protein powder costs about $0.027/g at the cheapest sites.

MLO rice protein powder is about $0.020/g

[there is one other source, pretty cheap and reputedly high quality, but I am not sure if I am allowed to post a link, so pm me if you want it]

You would add 1 part Nutribiotic to 8 parts lentils, or 1.25 part MLO to 8 parts lentils

to get a complete protein. You would do even better if you sprouted your lentils before you cooked them.

This works out to about $0.0083/g protein for lentils + Nutribiotic and $0.0079/g protein for lentils + MLO.

Compare this to (for my area, yours might be different)
cost per gram of protein
mackerel, canned $0.011 (Sav-a-lot, this is what I feed my dogs)
light tuna canned $0.020 ($0.50 for a 6 oz can, drained)
whole eggs $0.018 ($1.85 for 18)
whey powder $0.017 to $0.054 and up
nonfat milk $0.023 (about $3/gallon)
nonfat cottage cheese $0.024 (about $2 for the container)
eggs. whites only $0.026
mori nu silken tofu xtra lite $0.041

I am not sure where Costco chicken fits into this. Probably somewhere between t he egg whites and the tofu.

You could use any other bean (except for soy, which doesn't need any addition, like most other beans do),but they are all more expensive than lentils. The dried cooked bean + rice protein combo will still be cheaper than virtually anything else you can buy unless you are buying super gourmet rare varieties of beans like the kind they sell at Dean and Deluca.

breathinbleedout,

a cheap protein powder (casein/egg is cheaper than whey) is not that expensive

because you need less of it !

BTW, what do you want ?
save a few $ or gain lean mass ?

You'd rather take less protein (1g/kg body weight) but good quality one

and save your money, don't buy all the supplements you see in BB magazines !

I buy Gimme Lean as an alternative to sausage. I get it at Trader Joe's for $2.49 a tube. For 2 ounces you get 50 cals, 8g protein, 4g carb & 0 fat.

Dried beans are good & very cheap too. Then you can make beans & rice. Mix cooked or canned beans with a can of diced tomatoes & spices & serve over rice. Mmmmm.

i find supplements are cheaper than real food for protein except when it comes to tinned tuna and tinned fish but i cant eat tinned food all the time cos it's usually not good quality or full of sodium

a serving of protein owder sets me bac about 0.70 for 20g of protein

tuna at .45
equivalent egg whites at 0.65
chicken breast at 1.00
salmon 1.20

take small amount(maybe a teaspoon)of light mayo and mix with a can of tuna. dramatically improves the taste. at least give it a try

Mmmm.. turkey chili

Costs $15... Takes 20 minutes of work... you get 5 or 6 meals out of it @ 341 calories, 10g fat from poultry & olive oil, 32g vegetable carb, 37g protein. Freezes well and reheats in 2 minutes.

Damn i just went to your thread on making it and its not too hard, thanks a lot bro, very nice of you to share few secrets like that. Good looking out.

What can I say, I like to eat? I've made 4 batches of that chili now and it is still damn good, I eat it at least 6 times a week. Be sure to get "lean, skinless, ground turkey breast" -- some pre-packed brands use the skin. Glad you guys like it.. I split it into 8 or 9 meals now and it is a helluva deal for the price. So much tastier than anything I can make with canned tuna.

I forget if I added it to the other thread, but if you're feeling crazy, add in 2 TBSP of unsweetened cocoa powder to the chili. Makes it darker, richer, and tasty. (I did see that post saying cocoa raises insulin, but its like 2/3 tsp per serving)

I'll see what else I can cook up for you guys that is easy to make and reheat.

I already made mention of this in a seperate thread but anywya..

canned mackerel. Find it in the tuna isle. Throw some ketchup on them. 70 cents a can. Something like 80 -100 grams of protein per can.
